First Discovery of the New World
Christopher Colombus discovered the Americas.This inspired many Europeans to venture out to the New World and claim land for their countries. Which resulted in an increase of trade and Native Americans learning Christianity. But, European explorers also used Native Americans as slaves, and brought diseases with them. -
British Colonization
1607-1763. Jamestown was the first British colony in America, and marked the beginning of British colonization. People migrated to the New World and joined one of the thirteen colonies. Usually, their reason for leaving was their experience with religious prosecution. -
Boston Tea Party
Colonists were being heavily taxed on almost everything. So, they protested by dumping the tea in the Boston Harbor. -
Declaration of Independence Is Signed
The Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence, which declared the colonies independent from British rule. -
Second Great Awakening
Early 1800's. Religious movement that stressed the importance of reason and dignity of the individual. This movement gave hope of freedom to enslaved African Americans. -
Louisiana Purchase
The United States bought land from France.This more than doubled the size of the country and led to many expeditions to the west. -
Market Revolution
1815-1840. More goods were bought than made. New inventions were created making communication and transportation faster. The inventions also helped in making jobs easier and more efficient. The rise of factories brought new job opportunites,not only for men, but for women also.But working conditions became more harsh. -
Congress Passes the Indian Removal Act
This act forced Native Americans out of the Southeast,. They were pushed out of ancestral lands and made to go west of the Mississippi River. -
Industrial Revolution
End of 19th century. New inventions were introduced and factories were built. This made the average work week decreased and created more jobs, especially for women. -
Seneca Falls Convention
July 19-20, 1848. Female reformers gathered together and wrote a statement that demanded equal rights for women called the "Declaration of Sentiments." -
Lincoln Wins The Election of 1860
Lincoln had no support from Southern states. The Southern states seceded because the felt that they had lost political represention, and formed the Confederate States of America. -
Civil War
April 12, 1861 - April 9, 1865. The Union (North) and the Confederate States (South) fought agaisnt each other because of their different views. One example being slavery. The Union thought that it was morrally wrong, while the South approved it. -
Westward Expansion
1862-1900. The mass migration to the west. White settlers forced Native Americans out of their lands and into reservations The transcontinental railroad also promoted western settlement. -
Lincoln Issues the Emancipation Proclamation
The Emancipation Proclamation was issued, which freed slaves in Confederate States. -
Creation of the Transcontinental Railroad
The building of the railroad lasted from 1850 to 1871. It made transportation and trade faster and more efficient. But,the railroads also forced heavy taxes upon farmers that wanted to trade their crops. -
Reconstruction
1865-1877. The time period in which the government attempted to allow the Southern states back in to the Union. -
Congress Passes the Fourteenth Amendment
The Fourteenth Amendment made African Americans citizens, and did not allow any state to deny citizens their rights. -
The Rise of Big Businesses
1866- 1900s. Big bussinesses gained control over industry, which led to the creation of monopolies and trusts. Their control also led to harsh working conditions. -
Chinese Exclusion Act Is Passed
This act banned entry of Chinese immigrants into the United States. -
Jim Crow Laws are Created
1887-1954. These laws forced racial segregation between African Americans and Caucasians in the South.
