    On December 17th 1903, the Wright brothers make the first controlled flight in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.

    The Panama Canal Opens
    The Panama Canal connected the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, greatly reducing the time it took to travel between the two. It was one of the hardest projects ever performed and took 10 years to complete. It is still open today.
  • The Spirit of St. Louis

    The Spirit of St. Louis
    Charles Lindbergh successfully completes the first solo, transatlantic flight. The flight was from Long Island, New York to Paris, France.

    A Woman is Elected to The U.S Senate
    When Thaddeus Caraway passed away unexpectedly in 1931 from a blood clot, a special election was held where his wife Hattie Wyatt Caraway was elected to fill his seat. Hattie served in the Senate from 1932-1945, she was the first woman to preside over the senate (1943).
  • Franklin Delano Roosevelt Dies

    Franklin Delano Roosevelt Dies
    FDR was the first president to be elected for a third and fourth term. He passed away from a stroke three months into his fourth term on April 12th, 1945, leaving Harry S. Truman to take office and finish the fight in World War 2.
  • Explorer 1 Launches

    Explorer 1 Launches
    The first U.S satellite launches in January of 1958. Its main purpose was as a cosmic ray detector designed to measure the radiation environment in Earth orbit. It was in orbit for 12 years before burning up in 1970.
  • Miranda V. Arizona

    Miranda V. Arizona
    The Supreme Court ruled that detained criminal suspects, prior to police questioning, must be informed of their constitutional right to an attorney and against self-incrimination. The case began with the 1963 arrest of Phoenix resident Ernesto Miranda who was not informed of his rights prior to the police interrogation. During the two-hour interrogation, Miranda allegedly confessed to committing the crimes, which the police apparently recorded. We now have the Miranda Rights.
  • Nixon Resigns

    Nixon Resigns
    President Richard Nixon announces his resignation, becoming the first and only U.S President to do so. He did this in order to avoid impeachment after his involvement in the Watergate Scandal of 1972. His Vice-President Gerald Ford assumes the Precedency.
  • The Challenger Explodes

    The Challenger Explodes
    73 seconds after its launch, the space shuttle explodes instantly killing all seven on board. The tragedy was seen nationwide, as the launch was aired on national television. It has remained the worst accident in the history of the space program.
  • The Oklahoma City Bombing

    The Oklahoma City Bombing
    In April of 1995, Timothy McVeigh exploded a deadly bomb in a rented truck, just outside of a federal building in downtown Oklahoma City. The blast went off at 9:02 am, killing 168 people and injuring hundreds more. It is still known today as the worst act of "homegrown" terrorism in United States history.
