Proposition to Prohibit slavery
Thomas Jefferson had proposed that all slavery in the US should be prohibited by 1800 since slavery had already ended in the Northwest Territory. However his proposal was defeated by one vote. -
Supreme Court
The U.S. Supreme Court overturns its first U.S. law in the case of Marbury Versus Madison. This established the judicial review as they declared a statue within the constitution void. This established the courts positions as an equal member of the 3 branches of government. -
Burning of the White House
The British Forces burn the White House during the war of 1812. This causes President Madison to evacuate, and allowed the British to advance until halted by the Maryland Militia 3 weeks later. -
Peace Treaty between British and American Government
A peace treaty was signed between both governments at Ghent, bringing an end to the War of 1812. -
The U.S. Flag
The flag of the United States was officially adopted by congress with 13 red and white stripes and one star for each state in the union. At this current time the flag had 20 stars. -
The Panic of 1819
This is the first financial crisis in the U.S. This lead to foreclosures, bank failures, and unemployment. Several causes were heavy amounts of borrowing by the government to finance the War of 1812. -
Indian Removal Act
This act facilitated the relocation of Indian tribes from east of the Mississippi river. This act did not order their removal, but paved the way for Indians to accept land exchange treaties and lead the way for the Trail of Tears. -
The First Woman doctor
Elizabeth Blackwell was granted her degree by the Medical institute of Geneva, New York where she became the first female doctor in the United States. -
Abraham Lincoln
The president that ran on anti slavery platform, and defeated 3 other opponents. However he did not win the popularity vote and his election led to the seceding of states from the union. -
The Civil Right Act
Gave equal rights to blacks in jury duty, but would be overturned in 1883.
