The Monroe Doctrine
Proclamation in 1823 by President James Monroe. It warned European nations not to get involved in political matters in Central and South America. The Doctrine was intended to show that the United States was the only country that could influence such political matters. -
The Berlin Blockade
Russians began to stop all to and from West Berlin:
- closed Autobahn (due to "repairs")
- stopped all road traffic on June 15
- stopped all barge (water) traffic on June 21
- stopped all railroad traffic in and out on June 24 -
The Korean War
(1950-53)
United States involvement helped prevent North Korea from unifying all of Korea into one Communist Country. -
The Vietnam War
(1959-75)
Tried to stop the spread of communism.
- North Vietnam invaded South Vietnam
- The US sent millions of dollars and thousands of troops to help South Vietnam beat North Vietnam
- In the end, South Vietnam lost -
Cuban Missile Crisis
(October 15-28, 1962)
- US reconnaissance photos taken showed the Soviet Union had built nuclear missile bases in Cuba -
The Soviet-Afghan War
(1979-89)
- Stop the spread of Communism (Russia had invaded Afghanistan)
- The US gave 5 Million dollars to the Afghanis to defeat the Russians
- The US then realized this was not enough, and gave billions of dollars to the Afghanis to help them beat Russia because America felt they really needed to help them. -
The Attacks of 9/11
On September 11, 2001, 19 militants associated with the Islamic extremist group al-Qaeda hijacked four airliners and carried out suicide attacks against targets in the United States. Two of the planes were flown into the towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, a third plane hit the Pentagon just outside Washington, D.C., and the fourth plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania.
