    Uruguay, a formally independent republic, signs a treaty with Rio de Janeiro that cements its place as a buffer state between the warring Brazil and Argentina. Brazil was not a large supporter of the idea of a "buffer state"

    Uruguayan Civil War

    Civil war between the political parties Blancos (conservative) and Colorados (liberal). At the beginning of this conflict, Fructuoso Rivera was president of Uruguay. However, Rivera was seen as an illegitimate leader, and Manuel Oribe fought to take him out of his position of power.

    Invasion of Uruguay and Siege of Montevideo

    Juan Manuel de Rosas, governor of Buenos Aires (Argentina), sent an army under Manuel Oribe who invaded Uruguay and conquered most of the country, except for its capital Montevideo that endured a long siege starting in 1843. Brazil finally got involved, and helped free Uruguay from the invasion.
  • Berro Elected President

    Bernard Berro is elected president of Uruguay. The Blanco party now controls the government
  • Flores Rebels

    Venancio Flores launches a campaign of rebellion against Berro and his Colorado/Blanco government.

    Uruguayan War

    The Uruguayan War was fought between the Blanco Party and an alliance consisting of Brazil and the Colorado Party, supported by Argentina. Uruguay had been ravaged by struggles between the Colorado and Blanco parties, each attempting to seize and maintain power. The conflict ended with an amnesty between the parties, mainly drafted by Tomás Villalba (president at the time)
