US wins Mexican-American War
Mexicans were defeated. Mexicans signed the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ended the war and gave America much of the Northern territory of Mexico. -
Free Soil Party
The Free-Soil party is formed by former Liberty Party members at a convention in N. Y. with delegates from all free states. They nominate Martin Van Buren for President and Charles Francis Adams for Vice-President -
The Fugitive Slave Act
The Fugitive Slave Act was passed to be part of the Compromise of 1850. This act forced any official who did not arrest a slave to pay a fine. This act caused abolisionists to increase all efforts to stop slavery. It also increased Underground Railroad activity from slaves trying to get to Canada to try and get their freedom. -
Uncle Toms Cabin was released
Uncle Toms Cabin was a book that showed the point of veiw of slaves and the southerners were upset because they argued that they did not treat their slaves in the matter that was portrayed in uncle toms cabin. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
This act split up the rest of the louisiana territory into the two territories known as kansas and nebraska. this also gave the idea of popular sovereignty to let the people decide whether or not to see if the territories would join the union as a free or a slave state. -
Charles Sumner is Attacked by Preston
Pro-slavery Preston Brooks attacked Charles Sumner with a cane after Sumner gave a speech against the pro-slavery people for causing violence in Kansas. -
Dred Scott Decision
Dred Scott lost his case proving he should be free. Because he was held a slave and living on free soil. The court ruled that he not be free because he did not hold any land. -
Lecompton Constitution is Rejected by Kansas
When the Kansas-Nebraska Act was passed. Kansas was deciding on whether it would enter The Union as a Free or Slave State. Numerous constitutions were advanced by the territory to make this desicision. Kansas voters rejected the Lecompton Constitution to make Kansas a free state. -
John Browns Raid
John Brown was an radical abolitionist who was involved in anit-slavery violence in Kansas. He had led a group of seventeen including five black men. -
Abraham Lincoln gets elected
when abraham was elected, south carolina thought he was anti-slavery and didnt like the south so they seceeded from the union after that followed South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas. -
The South Begins Seceding
South Carolinia is the first state to secede from the union, followed by Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina.
