    Berlin Airlift

    After World War 2, the Allies split Germany up into different zones. They also seperted Berlin, the capital, into zones. When the Soviets had enough of the Allies, they blockaded West Berlin. The Soviets thought that the Allies would retreat but they sent airplanes with supplies every 3 minutes for 11 months into West Berlin. So eventually the blockade diminished.
  • The Formation of NATO

    The Formation of NATO
    In 1949, due to the fears of Soviet aggression, 12 nations created a Defensive Alliance. Some of those countries being the U.S. and Canada. It states that if any of the participating countries were attacked by soviet forces, they would all contribute defensive support.

    In response to West Germany joining NATO, the Soviet Union created the Warsaw Pact with Eastern European Nations. It was defensive treaty similarly to NATO.

    The Soviet Union, as part of the Space Race, launched the first unmanned satelite into space. It used an ICBM, or an intercontinental ballistic missle. This caused an uproar in the U.S. as they now had to compensate for the Soviets growing space presence. They spent a plethora of money on the sciences.

    The United States, trying to stop the spread of communism, trained anti-Castro Cuban exiles to invade cuba and stop communism. The U.S. failed to back up the invasion so the anti-Castro exiles were very easily defeated.

    Cuban Missile Crisis
    The U.S., in 1962, found that the Soviets were hiding nuclear missles in Cuba. The United States saw this as a threat and immediately demanded their removal. As another precaution, the U.S. set up blockades to prevent any more missiles being transported. Eventually, the Soviet Union agrees to taking out the missils if the U.S. wouldnt invsde Cuba.

    President Nixon was the very first president to visit the COmmunist China, along with that, he visited the Soviet Union. in 1969 the salt talks, or the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks, limited the amount of Intercontinental Ballistic Missils a country could have.

    Tiananmen Square Protest

    Many chinese people, mostly students, crowded into Tiananmen Square to protest against the domocracy in hopes for a greater one. Eventually, Chinese troops went in and killed many people. Protestors fought back but still thousands were killed.

    Fall of the Berlin Wall
    The Berlin wall was built in 1961 to keep West Germany and East Germany seperated. In 1989, the East German Communist party declared that they could go to and from East ans West Germany as they please, so a crowd gathered and they finally tore down the seperating wall.
