    Douglas MacArthur
    American General and field marshal of the Phillipine Army. From Australia, he launched the New Guinea campaign and later directed the campaigns that led to the liberation of the Phillipeans. He directed the Allied occupation of Japan.
  • Adolf Hitler

    Hitlers Nonaggression Pact with Stalin allowed him to invade Poland on September 1, starting WWII. In 1943 he refused to admit the defeat of the battle of Stalingrad, bringing death to many of his German troops. As the tide of war turned against Hitler, the extermination of the Jews was accelerated.
  • Pearl Harbor

    Japan launched a surprise air attack on the U.S Naval Base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. After just 2 hours of bombing, more than 2,400 Americans were dead, 21 ships had either been sunk or damaged, and more that 188 U.S Aircraft destroyed. The following day, America abondoned their policy of isolationism and declared war on Japan, Officialy joining them into WWII.
  • Executive Order 9066

    Executive Order 9066
    Issued by president Franklin D. Roosevelt on February 19, 1942. It authorized the evacuation of all persons that deemed a threat to the National Security. In the next 6 moths, 100,000 men, women, and children of Japanese ancestry were moved to assembly centers. They were then confined in isloated, fenced, and guarded relocation centers, Known as internment camps.
  • Battle of Saipan

    Battle of Saipan
    U.S. Marines stormed the beaches of the strategically significant Japanese island of Saipan, with a goal of gaining a crucial air base from which the U.S. could launch its new long-range B-29 bombers directly at Japan's home islands. Fighting became especially brutal and prolonged around Mount Tapotchau, Saipan's highest peak. On July 9, the U.S. flag was raised in victory over Saipan.

    Also known as "Operation Detachment", was a major battle in which the United States Armed Forces fought for and captured the island of Iwo Jima from the Japanese Empire. The American invasion had the goal of capturing the entire island, including it's 3 airfields, to provide a stanging area for attacks on the Japanese main islands.
  • Enola Gay

    Enola Gay
    On 6 August 1945, during the final stages of World War II, it became the first aircraft to drop an atomic bomb. The bomb code named "Little Boy" was aimed for Hiroshima which casued unprecedented destruction. This atomic bomb, the equivalent of 20,000 tons of TNT, flattened the city, killing tens of thousands of civilians. While Japan was still trying to comprehend this devastation three days later, the United States struck again, this time, on Nagasaki.

    Enola Gray dropped the bomb at 8:15 Hiroshima time, It missed the Aioi Bridge, its aiming point, by over 800 feet. Instead it hit a medical clinic. In a devistating blast, 4.7 miles of the city was destroyed and 90% of the cities medical personel's were killed.

    Within the first two to four months of the attack, the acute affects killed 90,000-166,000 in Hiroshima and 60,000-80,000 in Nagasaki. On August 15, 6 days after the attack on Nagasaki, Japan announded it's surrender to the Allies.

    Nagasaki was a major shipbuilding city and a large military port. But it was not a favoured target as it had been bombed five times in the previous twelve months. In the end, however, America was left with two targets. Kokura and Nagaski. Days after the bomb was dropped, Japan surrendered.
