United States Military
During the war there were about 16,000,000 people in the United States Military. About 11,200,000 served in the U.S. Army, 4,200,000 served in the Navy and 660,000 served in the Marines. The Army was organized into 3 forces in March of 1942. These forces were the Army Ground Forces, Army Air Forces, and the Army Service Forces. There were 5 types of divisions: infantry, mountain, armored, airborne, and cavalry. The United States had the strongest military during the war. -
Social Issues Before WWII
On October 29, 1929 the stock market crashed sending the world into the Great Depression. During this time many people were homeless or jobless and many people died. The economy was terrible before WWII. -
Roosevelt Becomes President
Franklin Delano Roosevelt was the US President through World War 2 until he died in 1945. He took office March 4, 1933. -
Alliance: Allies.
In the war, there were 2 different alliances, the Allies and the Axis. The United States was part of the Allies. Other members who in the Allies include France, the Soviet Union, and Great Britian. -
Battle of Midway
JAPAN VS. UNITED STATES. June 4th to the 7th, 1942. Yamamoto seeks to capture Midway and destroy the US Navy. It was the first major carrier vs. carrier engagement. The battle was decided by cryptanalysis, tactics, radar, pilot skills, weather and luck. Scouts from the U.S. fleet find the Japanese fleet first. After losing many planes in ineffective strikes, U.S. dive bombers manage to set 3 Japanese carriers on fire. Many more Japanese died than Americans, and the US wins the battle. -
Guadalcanal
JAPAN VS. UNITED STATES. United States wanted to have control over Guadalcanal (part of the Solomon Islands) so that they could stop Japan from invading Australia. The battle turned out to be one of the most vicious campaigns and the Japanese put up a fierce resistance but the US had superior military. US wins the battle, becoming the first US land troop defeat against the Japanese and securing the island. The battle ended on February 9, 1943. -
Battle of Iwo Jima
JAPAN VS. UNITED STATES. The capture of Iwo Jima would allow for sea and air blockades,tha ability to conduct air intensive air bombardment and to destroy the enemies air and naval capabilities. It was the longest sustained aerial offensive of the war. More marines were sent in than in any other battle and there were 100,000 men fighting on the island. The Japanese fought from below ground- Allies rarely saw a soldier, and the United States ended up winning the battle in March of 1945. -
President After the War
President Roosevelt died before the war had ended, and Harry Truman took office. He was president from 1945-1953. -
Result of the War
Japan refused to give up on fighting in the war and refused to surrender, so the US dropped 2 bombs on them, in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, killing thousands of people within days of each other. After this, Empire Hirohito of Japan finally decided to surrender. He agreed to surrender on September 2nd, 1945, and offically surrendered on August 15th, 1945, completely ending the war. US lost 291,557 soldiers and many other countries were facing a lot of casualtie as well. -
