Indian Removal Act/ Trail of Tears
President Andrew Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act in 1830, forcing the Cherokee population of the Southeastern United States to migrate from their ancestral lands. This migration began in 1838, and became known as "The Trail of Tears." -
Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
After several years of conflict over land ownership, the United States and Mexico sign the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The United States gain full possession of Alto California, New Mexico, and Texas. -
Convention at Seneca Falls
In 1848 an organized women's rights convention is held at Seneca Falls by activists Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott. The Convention calls for equal rights for women and the right to vote. -
Abraham Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln took office as the 16th president of the United States. Due to growing tension over slavery, and fears that Lincoln would side with the North, several southern states seceded from the Union. -
American Civil War
The American Civil War began over economic tensions between the Northern and Southern states. After the election of Abraham Lincoln, several southern states seceded from the Union, causing Lincoln to send troops to Fort Sumter which the Confederates took as an act of aggression. The war lasted until 1865 -
