    The United States hockey team won the gold medal at the 1980 Winter Olympics. This was a crucial win, because the Soviets had won gold the previous four consecutive times. This United States defeated the Soviet team before winning the gold medal against Finland. This was more than just a hockey game, it gave hope to the entire country.

    Mikhail Gorbachev replaces Konstantin Chernenko as Soviet leader. Gorbachev is the only Soviet leader that lived through WWII as a child. He allows subsidiaries to leave the communist regime. Gorbachev ultimately signs peace treaties with America in 1987. The Soviet Union falls under his rule.

Two attacked the Twin Towers, one crashed into the Pentagon, and another was crashed in Stoneycreek Township, Pennsylvania, after the citizens on the plane took over the hijackers. The United States responded to this attack by declaring war on terrorism.
