Formed by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison favoring a strict interpretation of the Constitution to restrict the powers of the federal government and emphasizing states' rights. -
Jacksonian Democrats
Championed greater rights for the common man and was opposed to any signs of aristocracy in the nation. Jacksonian democracy was aided by the strong spirit of equality among the people of the newer settlements in the South and West. It was also aided by the extension of the vote in eastern states to men without property; in the early days of the United States, many places had allowed only male property owners to vote. -

Made up of Whigs and antislavery Democrats. Made the jump from 3rd party to major party -
Roosevelt Democrats
Built largely of southerners, small farmers, organized labor, and big-city political organizations. Included Economic and Social Welfare programs and support for African Americans and other minorities. -
