  • Dred Scott case

    Dred Scott case
    a more detailed look at the life of Dred Scott Dred Scott was a slave, who had lived in the free states of Illonois and Wisconsin. After his master moved back to the slave state of Missouri, he sued on the grounds that he had previously been free.   • Harper's Ferry

    Harper's Ferry
    The Dred Scott case and other events that highlighted the horrid details of slavery enraged many abolitionists. One of these abolitionists was John Brown, and in 1859 he and 21 volunteers raided Harper's Ferry in an attempt to arm the slaves, starting an armed rebellion.     In late 1860, Abraham Lincon was elected as the 16th president of the United States of America. He was elected in very turbulent times for the nation, and just 1 month after his election, South Carolina became the first state to sucede. His election was a main reason for the sucession of the many states that followed, for they felt that they would have no representation under his northern, republican government.     Grant was personally chosen by Lincon to be the union Armys' general throughout the length of the civil war. Before the war, he had served in mulitple others, including the mexican-american war only years earlier.He was a very important man throughout the war, and was upon the highest ranking in the union.   • Emancipation

    Emancipation
    The Emancipation Declaration was issued by Lincon in order to free all american slaves. This was an attempt to end the divide between the north and south, and end the war. Although this document did free most slaves, it did not yet apply to all. It also would only come into affect if the union won, and it did not become an offical law until the 13th amendment was passed.     The Homestead Act offered farmers land, but only if they would live there for 5 years and plant crops. Many of the hopeful farmers had to forefiet, because the land was not fertile enough to support a family. Around 10 percent of thoses granted land benefited. Millions of Acres. Iowa and Nebraska.   • Founding of the Red Cross

    Founding of the Red Cross
    Clara Barton was a nurse during the war, and was asked by Lincon himself to help trace thousands of missing union soldiers. She founded the Red Cross in 1863, and the organization is still around today. this is a good example of the many technological developments, and innovations that appeared during the war. N.d.     This battle ran a total of three days, and is one of the most well known of all civil war battles. It was the closest the south ever got to victory, and is the inspiration for Lincon's Gettysburg Address.

    address This famous speech was spoken by Lincon a few months after the battle of Gettysburg. In his speech he spoke of honoring those who dies, but also of a more symbolic message of continuing their fight so as not to loose the country our ancestors worked so hard for.

  • Lincon is Assassinated

    Lincon is Assassinated
    Even after the war was over, tensions were still very high. In 1865, John Wilkes Booth assassinated Lincon during a play in Fords Theatre, in Washigton DC. He was the first American president to be assassinated, and this event shook both the north and the south, but especially the north, whom had hoped that he would lead them through reconstruction.     Johnson was Lincon's vice president, and when Lincon was assassinated, Johnson became the president.   • Treaty of Fort Laramie

    Treaty of Fort Laramie
    This treaty was in regards to the new reservation system; which was one of Americas attempts to assimilate native culture. This treaty guarunteed a reservation for the Sioux and the Cheyenne. Less than 20 years later, gold was found on the reserve and the treaty was not withheld by the americans. This is an example of the conflicts arising between the American government and the natives, which, as in this case, was leading to wars.

    14th Amendment
    This amendment gave citizenship to all newly freed slaves, and guarunteeing them their basic civil rights, as promised by the consitution.
  • Ulysses.S Grant

    Ulysses.S Grant
    Grant was the union general during the war, and was now elected as the president for the republicans, replacing Johnson. He was well known for his work as the union general in the civil war, and the people of America felt that they could trust him once again, after the war had ended. Though he had been trusted, there were many scandlas during his two-term run, and he stepped down. N.d.     . After the votes were counted, in the 1877 election Tilden, the democrat representative, had won. A handful of southern states, who were at the time run by the republican party lied and stated that Hayes had won their state. After cries for a recount, the issue was passes to an oppointed committe, but most members were republican, and sided with Hayes. He then ended reconstuction to win back the southern votes. N.d.
