This was the 1st railroad. These new ways of transportation benefitted the US growth. -
Lincoln elected president
The first Republican to win a presidency, Lincoln was elected as the 16th president of the US. He recievedd 40% of the popular vote and ran up against Breckinridge, Bell, and Douglas. -
Crittenden Compromise
This was proposed by Crittenden. This attempted to resolve US secession issues. -
South Carolina secedes
South Carolina seceding from the Union began a crisis. The South and North did not agree upon the issue of slavery. Once Lincoln was elected, the South decided to remove themselves from the US. -
More southern states secede
Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisianna, and Texas follow South Carolina's decision and secede from the Union. They are unhappy with the Constitution and favor slavery. -
Kansas becomes a state
Kansas becomes the 34th state in America. It is admitted as a free state and part of opposing slavery in the Union. -
Confederate States of America created
Eleven of the southern states took part and formed this government. Jefferson Davis is elected to take charge. The group broke away from United States constitution and seceded. -
Lincoln's inauguration
This was the day Lincoln was inaugurated as president. South opposed this while the North was ecstatic and his ideals to end slavery. -

Fort Sumter is located in Charleston, South Carolina. Confederates open fire and attack. The Civil war officially has begun. -

This was the 3 part plan in Scott's attempt to defeat the Confederacy. This was to blockade the Southern and east coasts, provide control of the Mississippi River, and defeat Confederates at both ends. -

Robert E Lee resigns from the Union army. Prior, he turns down to command Union armies. -
Richmond becomes capital
Richmond becomes the captial of the Confederacy. After they broke apart from the Union, they created what was called as the Confederate States of America. -
First Bull Run
Union army general McDowell is defeated at Bull Run. This battle was located 25 miles outside of Washington. Jackson, a confederate general adopts the nickname "Stonewall" for limiting attacks made against them. -
McClellan replaces Scott
General McClellan replaces Scott. He takes charge of the Union armies. -
Grant captures Fort Henry
He beging military campaign in Mississippi. Grant as well with his troops captures Fort Henry in Tennessee. -

During the civil war was an important Union operation led by General McClellan. This was against the Confederates to capture the capital Richmond. -
Shiloh
Shiloh was a small church located on the Tennessee River. The battle consisted of a surprise attack by the confedereates on Grant's troops. Due to lack of preparation, 13,000 Union soldiers were killed and wounded and 10,000 Confederates as well. -
Conscription
This was a military draft during the civil war. Men were concripted into the Union or Confederate armies. -
Farragut captures New Orleans
Farragut captures New Orleans. With help from his troops, he defeats the oponents using ships and other strategic techniques. -
Battle of Seven Pines
Located in Virginia, the battle was part of the Peninsula Campaign. It was led by McCLellan and the army of the potomac. -
McClellan's army retreats
During the Seven-Days Battle the Union was attacked. McClellan made the best decision for him and his troops and decided to retreat. -
Second Bull Run
The second bull run is located in Northern Virginia. 55,000 Confederates run by Stonewall and Longstreet defeat 75,000 troops. The Union army retreats. -
Antietam
The bloodiest battle in history. McClellan stops Lee and the Confederates in Maryland with numerous troops. By the end of the battle, 26,000 in total are dead and wounded. -
Fredericksburg
Fredericksburg is located in Virginia. General Burnside is defeated along witht his army of the Potomac. 12,653 men are killed. -
Emancipation Proclamation
This was issued by Lincoln during the Civil War, but was not passed by Congress. It gave slaves freedom in 10 states which was about 4million of the slave population. Because of the Proclamation, 50,000 slaves were freed. -
Lincoln signs federal draft act
This enrolled and called out national forces. He signed this Union draft during the civil war and during the draft of the federal governement. -
Chancellorsville
The Battle of Chancellorsville is located in Virginia. General Hooker, in charge of the Union army is defeated by Lee and his fewer number of troops. Hooker retreats and Stonewall is injured due to his own men. -
Vicksburg
This was the ending of the Vicksburg Campaign in the Civil War. General Grant and his troops crossed the Mississippi River and fought the Confederate army in Mississippi. A long lasting seige; there were many casualities. -
Brandy Station
This was the largest cavalry battle of the civil war. Many fought amoung horses and 20,000 soldiers were occupied and involved during the fight. -
Gettysburg
Turning point of the Civil War. The Battle of Gettysburg was located in Pennsylvania. It was the longest battle and had the most casualities in the Civil War. Lee's invasion of the Confederate army was a huge victory for Union troops. -
Chickamauga
This battle ended and finalized the Chickamauga Campaign. This was one of the most important battles for the Union and resulted in the second highest number of causalities during the Civil War. -
Andersonville
Andersonville in Sumter County would become a prison for captured Union forces. The soldiers were under brutal conditions and overpopulation. Many died there from the deteriorating atmosphere. -
Gettysburg Address
This is one of the most well known speeches in American history. The address was President Lincoln's response after the brutal Civil War. It was spoken at the Soldier's National Ceremony in Gettysburg. -
Chattanooga
Gerneral Thomas and his 40,000 troops took Chattanooga and were against Hooker's 20,000 and Sherman's 20,000 forces. Grant wanted to take high ground. This was a battle resulting after Chickamauga. -
Fort Pillow
This battle was fought in Tennessee along the Mississippi River. The fort was attacked by the Union army, and resulted in Confederate victory. They were led by General Forest. -
Battle of the Wilderness
This was Grant's first battle against Robert E Lee. It was over the overland campaign in Richmond. -
Cold Harbor
Union General's Grant and Meade faced Robert E Lee of the Confederates in Cold Harbor Virginia. Confederates won, with 13,000 out of 15,000 casualities Union forces. They formed their forces in a strategic 7-mile plan and were successful. -
Lincoln signs bill
Lincoln signs a pill pertaining to the fugitive slave laws. This gave slaves more freedoms while the South became infuriated. -
Wade-Davis Bill
Introduced in Feburary of 1863 about supporting the Confederacy, the bill was not passed. Lincoln pocket vetoed it because if it was passed, it would be difficult to resolve conflict with the Union. -
Battle of Mobile Bay
This was a federal fleet in which Farragut fought a small Confederate fleet. -
Cedar Creek
This was over Valley Campaigns during the civil war. Unions counterattack was successful and resulted in the victory. -
Lincoln reelected
Lincoln is reelected by popular vote. Andrew Johnson becomes the Vice President. North appeals the presidential decision. -
March to the Sea
Located from Atlanta to Savannah Georgia. Confederate General Wheeler was defeated against Union General Sherman. 2,100 causualities of 3,100 were Union casualities. His victories were the begininning of the end of the Confederates. -
Battle of Nashville
This was a 2 day battle in the Franklin-Nashville Campaign. Was the biggest victory for the Union army during the civil war. -
Freedmen's Bureau
The Freedmen Bureau's bill, turning into Freedmen's Bureau was initiated by Lincoln. It was passed by Congress to aid former slaves. This sheltered, fed, educated, and gave other necessities for their life. -
Petersburg
This was a series of battles and sieges. Grant fought Petersburg unsuccessfully. Lee conducted a strategic plan. Union's resulted in the victory. -
Lee surrenders at Appomattox
Lee surrenders to Grant. His troops were weak and surrounded. He came to the realization that they had no chance. They met up at Appomattox and concluded the most gruesome conflict in history. -
Lincoln assassination
The Civil War was beginning to end. Happened 5 days after the surrender of Lee, he was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth. A famous actor, he strategically planned the assassination and shot him at Fords Theatre in DC. -
Lincoln's death
After the assassination, Lincoln died a day later. He was officially dead in the location of the Petersen House. He was the first president ever assassinated and his death made a huge impact on the US. -
Andrew Johnson
Andrew Johnson, vice president of Lincoln, became the 17th president following Lincoln's assassination. He had a 4 year term and had the nickname's "Father of the Homestead" and "Sir Veto." -
Ku Klux Klan is formed
This Klan spread during the Reconstruction era. They were about white power and were violent and threatening against blacks, even including muder. Government assed the force acts to end KKK crimes. -
Jefferson Davis taken prisoner
Jerfferson Davis is captured in Irwinville, Georgia. He was by Union general Wilson and his cavalry. -
Civil War ends
Army of Potomac celebrated the end of the Civil War. Many paraded along Pennsylvania Ave in DC. Only a couple weeks after Lincoln's death, many payed their respects and mourned. -
13th amendment ratified
This was a Reconstruction Amendment adopted after the Civil War. It outlawed slavery and considered it a crime. People who disobeyed the amendment were punished. -
Civil Rights Act
This law was necessary to protect the civil liberties of African Americans during the Civil War. It was vetoed a year prior by Johnson, but this time a majority of the House agreed and it became a law. -
American Equal Rights Association forms
These were forms signed to allow rights for all American citizens including former slaves and people of different races. -

Tennessee ratifies 14th amendment
Tennessee becomes the first state to ratify the 14th amendment. Slavery is abolished and liberties are given to former slaves. -
Southern Homestead Act of 1866
The act attempted to end debt after the Civil War and during Reconstruction. Sharecropping and tenant farming were also a major part of this. The act passed allowed 46 million acres of land for sale in some Southern states. Much land was distributed and it allowed many who needed land and a job to do so. -
Tennessee readmitted to Union
Tennessee is readmitted to the Union after seceding. Slowly, the country is starting to overcome the war. -

Michigan began the first state to tax property. This money was used to pay off universities for education purpouses. -

The 2nd Reconstruction Act was placed after another conflict between Congress and the vetoing of bills. -

Alaska becomes part of the United States. It is land purchased by president Johnson. -

Congress wanted to impeach Johnson but were unsuccessessful. He vetoed many bills that Congress passed.
