The battle at Bull Run was 3 months after the Civil War began. This was the first real battle of the war. With a Southern win, the Federal troops retreated towards Washington. -

Leesburg was important for the Union for transportation.There were over 300 Unions dead and 800 missing, wounded or caputured from this war. -

The Confederates secretly attacked the Union with 40,000 soldiers. This caused over 23,000 deaths. It was considered to be the bloodiest battle in Americain history. -

There was a big stone wall to protect this fort. The North had advanced cannons to destory the wall. The North captured this fort. -
The Great Locomotive Chase
Farms in Georgia produced supples to feed and cloth the Confederates. 22 Union spies tried to stop these supplies from getting to the Confederates. So the Union spies captured the Confederates General. -
Battle of New Orleans
New Orleans was the largest city and the most important port for the Confederacy. David Farragut destoyed New Orleans. New Orleans was very important for the Confederacy to win the war. -
Battle of Williamsburg
There were 41,000 Federals and 32,000 Confederates in this battle. The Confederates retreated from Yorktown in this battle, The Federals won the battle. -
Battle of Antietam Day 1
The Battle of Antietam begins. General McCellan finds General Lee and his army. Tha battle began at Sharpsburg, Maryland. -
Battle of Antietam Day 2
This was the single most bloodiest day in American History. The battle was near Miller's cornfield and around the Dunker Church. -
Battle of Antietam Day 3
General Lee's wounded arm was still fighting McCellan. He then decided to retreat South across the river. Lee and his troops went across the Potomac into the Shenandoah Valley. -
First All-Black Regiment
This was a first in U.S history. This was formed by the Union's New Orleans. There technical name was "First Regiment Louisiana Native Guard" -
Lincoln addes 3 new amendments
- All slaves would be emancipated until 1900.
- Slaves freed during the war would remain free.
- The U.S. would pay for consensual colonization.

The Emancipation Proclamation
The Emancipation Proclamation goes into effect. This was made by Abraham Lincoln. The Emancipation Proclamation says that anyone who is held as a slave in the rebellion states must be freed. -
Battle of Chancellorsville
General Lee sent Stonewall Jackson and 30,000 soldiers to surprise attack Hooker's army. Hooker and his men were cooking dinner near a crossroad names Chancellorsville. The Union army was completly surprised from this attack. -
West Virginia Joins The U.S.
The west side fo Virginia did not want to seceed from the Union. The West side of Virginia decided to stay part of the Union by making their own state, West Virginia. -
West Virginia Becomes a State
West Virginia becomes the 35th state in the United States. West Virginia is also the first state that the terms of a slave and free state didn't matter. -
Battle at Gettysburg: Day 1
In Pennyslvania, the North and South meet up accidentally.Union took high ground early. A.P Hill and Rebels where trying to get shoes. The North had 90,000 men. The South had 75,000 men. -
Battle at Gettysburg: Day 2
Rebels take over unattended Little Round Top hill. Both sides wanted to be at high grounds. General Lee ordered his men to go from Seminary Ridge to Cemetery Hill. -
Battle at Gettysburg: Day 3
This is the Final day in Gettysburg. General Lee thought he could defeat the Union. The South lost and the North got a moral boost for the war. -
Ulysess S. Grant arrives in Chattanooga
Ulysess S. Grant arrives in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He starts to secure a better supply line to the city. This was to help the Union. -
Gettysburg Address
Lincoln made a speech known as the "Gettysburg Address". This was considered to be one of the most famous speeches in history. This speech was an attemp to unify the nation. -
Battle of Bean's Station
The Confederates tried to recapture Knoxville after a once failed attempt. 700 Unions died while 900 Confederates died. The Union had won the battle. -
Anti-slavery elections
Arkansas commander General Frederick Steele is instructed by Abe Lincoln. He was instructed to allow elections on the proposed anti-slavery constitution into their state. -
Kilpatrick Splits His Force
In Richmond Virginia, Kilpatrick splits his army. He splits his army into 2 groups of 500 men. This was to attack Richmond, Virginia. -
"In God We Trust"
"In God We Trust" was first stamped on U.S. coins. This phrase is still on U.S. coins today. This is the official U.S. motto today. -
Battle of the Wilderness
This battle in Virginia was a grusome on for the Union. U.S Grant and his troops suffered from 17,666 deaths. General Lee only suffered from 7,750 casualities. -
Battle of Spotsylvania Court House
This was a 2 week battle along the Spotsylvania front. The Union captured a great amount of Lee's army and nearly cut the Confederate army in half. The Union won the battle. -
John Hunt Morgan Killed
John Hunt Morgan died in Greeneville Tennesse. Morgan was the Confederate raider's leader. -
McClellan a Canidate for President
George McClellan was nominated as the Democratic canidate for President. McClellan promised for an anti-war country. McClellan lost the Election to Lincoln. -
Nevada joins the U.S.
Nevada joins the United States. Nevade becomes the 36th state in America. Nevada is the 2nd state to not have to choose if it is going to be a free or slave state. -
Lincoln Elected for his 2nd Term.
Abe Lincoln is re-elected for President of the Unites States. This is his 2nd term as president. Lincoln did not live through his whole election after being killed in 1865. -
Battle of Nashville
In Nashville, Tennesse, General John Bell Hood tried to force General William T. Sherman and his army out of Nashville. General Hood lost and retreated. He had over 4,000 deaths compared to Sherman's 2,140 deaths. -
Ending Civil War Failure
President Lincoln meets with Confederate Vice President Alexander Stephens at Hampton Roads, Virginia. They had tried to make a treaty to end the war. The meeting was a failure and the war continued. -
Lee Appoints Johnston
General Lee appoints Joe Johnston as commander of the only other effective fighting force that remains in the Confederates if America. This fighting force is in North Carolina. -
Lincoln visits Richmond
Abe Lincoln walks to the Confederates Capital in Richmond, Virginia. While walking, Lincoln was being cheered on by a crowd. The crowd consisted of mostly freed slaves. -
Civil War Celebrations
Celebrations in Washington D.C break out. This was from the excitment of the war ending. -
Lincoln's Assassination
Abe Lincoln was shot in Ford's Theatre in Washington D.C. John Wiles Booth was the man who assassinated Lincoln by shooting him in the head. -
John Wilkes Booth Dies
In Virginia, John Wilkes Booth is shot and killed in a tobacco farm. He was killed from assignating President Lincoln in the Ford's Theater. -
Civil War Ends
The Confederates sign the surrender terms. The Union had won the war. This ended the bloodiest 4 years in U.S. history. -
Voting for Black State Suffrage
Minnesota and Wisconsin vote on Black State Suffrage. Minnesota's majority vote was against it. Wisconsin's vote was also against it. -
13th Amendment
The 13th Amendment was put into the U.S. Constitution. This amendment was to abolish slavery and involuntary servitude. -
The K.K.K. is organized
The K.K.K. stands for Ku Klux Klan. The name was made from John B. Kennedy. This group was organized by Thomas M. Jones in Pulaski, Tennessee. -
Lincoln's Birthday
This was the first formal observation of President Lincoln's birthday. It was held in Washington D.D. President Johnson attended. -
New Freedman's Bureau Bill
Congress passed the New Freedman's Bureau Bill. This helped former slaves be free providing hospitals and schools for former slaves. -

The U.S. decides that some states in the U.S. consist of a State of Peace in the country. These states were Virginia, Arkansas, Florida, Mississippi, Georgia, Louisiana, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Alabama. -

President Johnson vetoed this act. The Congress overrode President Johnson's decision and formed the Civil Rights Act of 1866. -

Congress approves the 14th Amendment and it is put into the Constitution. The 14th Amendment effect is that all people are U.S. citizens if they were born in this country. -

The U. S. Secret Service begins an investigation on the K.K.K. The Ku Klux Klan was a very voilent and unjust cult. The U.S. had to investigate this group. -
New Jersey Ratifies the 14th Amendment
New Jersey ratifies the 14th Amendment. New Jersey is one of the many states to do this. -

There was a fire in the Philadelphia ship-yard. It accidently destroyed several ships that were used during the Civil War. -
African Americans Get Right to Vote
Africain Americains in Washington D. C. gain the right to vote. This right was given ina bill that was once vetoed by President Johnson. -

Nebraska joins the United States. It became the 37th state in the U.S. -
Alaska Bought
William P. Seward signs a treaty with Russia. This treaty was about buying Alaska for 2 cents an acre. This treaty was called "Seward's Folly" by Democrats. -
Africain Americans Votes Rejected
In Alexandria, Virginia, thousands of votes from Africain Americains were rejected. They were were granted universal suffrage according to the Reconstruction Act. -
5th Military District
The 5th Military district was in control by General Philip Sheridan. He had control of Louisiana and Texas. New Orleans was designated as his headquarters. -
2nd Reconstruction Act passed
Congress passes the 2nd Reconstruction Act. This Act was once vetoed by President Johnson. -
Congress admits States into Union
Congress passes a bill admitting Arkansas, Florida, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Louisiana, and South Carolina into the Union. Mississippi,Virginia, and Texas,were refused in being in the Union because they didn't ratified the 14th Amendment. -
Edwin Stanton Retirement
Edwin Stanton is forced into retirement by Andrew Johnson. Edwin Stanton was the Secretary of War. -
