The start of global competition for the world’s resources → Industrial revolution started taking off in england and spread to other parts of Europe then came to the U.S. The United States expaned especially when the United States acquired Hawaii and Alaska, both of which became states in 1959. -

Two last parts of the Spanish Empire in 1898: Cuba and the Philippines Cuba wanted their independence. All of this lead to taking Alaska and Hawaii -
Havana Habor
The U,S,S maine blew up in the Havana Habor. More than 260 men were killed. The Maine was suppose to go to Cuba and it was suppose to bring home American citizens in danger from fighting and to protect American property.No one really knew why the ship expolded,but the thought was that there was something wrong with the boat. -
Military Clash
It was the first major military clash between the Spanish and the Americans. U.S. involvement in Latin America and Asia increased greatly as a result of the war and continues today! -
Treaty of Paris
The United States and Spain signed an armistice on August 12th ending what Secretary of State John Hay called "a splendid little war." The actual fighting in the war had lasted only 15weeks. The U.S and Spain met in Paris to agree on a treaty. Spain freed Cuba and turned over the islands of Guam in the Pacific and Puerto Rico in the West Indies to the United States. Spain also sold the Phillippines to the United States for $20 million. -
Filipino and U.S. fighting
U.S. troops fire the first shots of the war, killing three Filipino soldiers triggering fighting between U.S. troops and Filipino independence forces. -
Boxer Rebillion
China fell behind when the industrial revolution took off because they started getting weak leaders which made them an easy target. European and American powers started moving into China to create a larger market because of their larger population. The chinese don’t like it and a group of workers called the boxers rebel against the European control of China. This movement was called the Boxer Rebellion.
