Compromise of 1850
California entered the union, the boundary between Texas and New Mexico was settled, fugitive slave act required the return of runaway slaves, and slavery is abolished from Washington DC. -
Kansas Nebraska Act
The decision of the states position on slavery was left up to the people. The people from both sides wanting the state on their side made a battlefield with much blood giving the nickname bleeding Kansas. -
Dred Scott
Being a slave, Dred Scott was property not a person, therefore he did not have rights and was not a free man. -
Splitting the Country
Starting South Carolina, seven other states left the Union to form the C.S.A (Confederate States of America) and elect Jefferson Davis as their president. -
The election of Abraham Lincoln
Lincoln answers all question he is asked, he wins the 1860 election without being on the ballot in the south. Comes in to office after the country is split. -
Battle of Fort Sumter
Attack on the fort for soldiers not leaving and instead recieving supplies to stay. Begins the civil war. -
Battle of Bull Run
First major battle. Confederate victory. People came to watch the battle like a sporting event. -
Battle of Antietam
Major Union victory. This is the turning point of the war for the Union. -
Emancipation Proclamation
Freed all slaves from rebellious states. Allowed for the formation of the 54th regiment, an all black regiment from Massachusetts. -
Appomattox Court House
Robert Lee Surrenders to the Union, ending the civil war. -
Lincoln's Assassination
John Wilkes Booth shot and killed President Lincoln point blank in the back of the head at a theater. Making Andrew Johnson, a man from the south, the new president. -
Ku Klux Klan
Terrorist group set on instilling fear in African Americans to keep them as slaves. -
The Impeachment
Andrew Johnson, continually vetoed all of congresses decisions and fired a man when congress made it illegal (setting him up). Going nowhere with reconstruction congress impeached the president for breaking the law. -
The 1868 Presidential Election
The winner of the election, and the 18th president of the United States of America, Ulysses S. Grant was more of a figure head to congress. They continued their reconstruction plan and passed the 13th-15th amendments to the constitution making slavery illegal, black suffrage and made anyone born in the United States a citizen. -
End of Reconstruction
Rutherford Hayes, won the election in 1876. As president he ended reconstruction removing Federal soldiers. This caused organizations like the KKK to take hold.
