    There were reports of widespread torture, murder, and other abuse in the rubber plantations which led to Belgian outrage. Following the unrest, a nationalist movement in the Belgian Congo demanded the end of colonial rule which led to the country's independence.

    Ghana became a member of the Commonwealth of Nations and was led to independence by Kwame Nkrumah. This was important because it was the start of the liberation of Africa from colonial rule and established socialist Africa.

    This was the racial segregation under the all-white government of South Africa. The government dictated that the non-white South Africans, who were a majority of the population, had to live in separate areas and use separate public facilities.

    This was a major armed conflict between France and the Algerian National Liberation Front. This led to Algeria winning its independence from France.

    8 years before the genocide began with the Khmer Rouge, Cambodia was fighting a civil war. This was fought between the Cambodian Monarchy, Republic, and their allies against the Cambodian Communists.

    This was caused by the government's inability to satisfy the rising expectations of the Iranian people. This led to the toppling of the monarchy.
