  • Democratic Party

    The Democratic party is a party whose values are more conservative.
  • Secession

    Secession: When you leave a union or federation of states. Usually when this happens it causes a crisis. This happened when the South left the union and created the civil war.
  • Grandfather Clause

    Grandfather Clause: a clause exempting certain classes of people or things from the requirements of a piece of legislation affecting their previous rights, privileges, or practices. When this clause goes into effect it usually causes conflict because certain people are being excluded from rights that they should have.
  • Writ of Habeas Corpus

    The Writ of Habeas Corpus is when a court orders you to release a person that your imprisoning and prove to them why you need to detain them.
  • Solid South

    Solid South: the politically united southern states of the US, traditionally regarded as giving unanimous electoral support to the Democratic Party.
  • Free Soil Party

    The Free Soil Party was a political party dedicated to opposing the expansion of slavery in the west.
  • Know Nothing Party

    The Know Nothing party was a political party who opposed the leaders and followers of the catholic church.
  • The Fugitive Slave Act

    The Fugitive Slave Act was an act passed by the president at the time. This act said that everyone had the right to return any slave to there master who does not have proper documentation. This created massive conflict because even people who did have proper documentation were taken away and forced into slavery.
  • Bleeding Kansas

    Bleeding Kansas was a military conflict between the bordering free states and the slave states.
  • Bull Run

    The battle of Bull Run was a battle during the Civil War. This was one of the major victories for the confederate forces.
  • Battle of Fort Sumter

    The Battle of Fort Sumter was an attack on Fort Sumter which spawned the Civil War. This is undoubtedly what lead to and directly caused the Civil War.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    The Emancipation Proclamation was when President Lincoln "abolished" slavery in the United States. He condemned the South for taking part in slavery. Although, this Emancipation Proclamation didn't have any affect because Lincoln had no right to impose laws on the South. This caused a crisis between the states hence leading to the Civil War.
  • Battle of Gettysburg

    The Battle of Gettysburg is considered to be one of the most important battles fought during the Civil War. After General Lee attacked the north and won he decided to go back in for more. When he got there he suffered a horrible defeat. This in turn lead to the fall of the South during the Civil War.
  • Draft Riots

    The Draft Riots were riots in lower Manhattan. These riots were brought on by new laws passed by congress. The laws passed affected the working class and this made them very upset. So, they rioted. This causes a crisis between the citizens of the time and the government.
  • Black Codes

    The Black Codes were special laws that only applied to "blacks". These laws created major conflict between "blacks" and "whites".

    Reconstruction

    The Reconstruction acts laid out a process for the Southern states to come back into the union. These acts also gave black men the right to vote. This one act caused major conflict and lead to the creation of the KKK and other hate groups. Many men were beaten & killed just for wanting to vote.
  • Impeachment of Andrew Johnson

    Andrew Johnson faced a conflict with the rest of the US government. He was the only President to be impeached.
  • Jim Crow Laws

    The Jim Crow Laws were started just after Reconstruction and it regulated and enforced racial segregation. This brings in the term "separate but equal". These laws created major racial conflict until the 1950's.
  • Poll Taxes & Literacy Tests

    When Reconstruction began it gave black men the right to vote. Many southerners did not want this to happen because there was a majority of slaves who wanted to vote. So, they came up with Poll Taxes & Literacy Tests. These taxes and tests prevented blacks from voting.
  • Plessy vs. Ferguson

    Plessy vs. Ferguson was a landmark supreme court case. It created the term "separate but equal"
