The Abolition Movement
Abolitionists were people who stood against slavery. During this time escaped slaves would go to the Underground railroad which was a network of secret routes and safe houses. -
Indian Removal Act
As gold was found in Cherokee land, Southern states passed laws allowing them to take over Native American lands. This led to Jackson passing the Indian removal act in 1830, relocating natives. -
Trail of tears
The Cherokee had been confined in camps for months, American soldiers had forced them on a march to Indian Territory. They were barley provided with anything as they traveled through the harsh weathers, causing over 4,000 people dying from cold, illness and starvation. -
Whig Party
In 1834, Senators Clay and Webster had started a new political party called the Whig Party. They believed Jackson was tuning into more of a king as he exceeded his powers as president. They promoted business and expansion in the industry. -
Texas Revolution
A war between Mexico and Texas colonists which resulted in Texas's Independence from Mexico. -
Common School Movement
The common school movement was the effort to fund schools in communities along with giving every American child an education. -

Opposition to Americans - Nativism
The new number of immigrants in the U.S. worried the Native-born Americans. They feared the new languages, religious practices, and more will ruin the culture of the U.S. Their fear created prejudice which led to passing laws that favored Native-born over immigrants. -
Trails to the West
Pioneers who took the trails to the West such as the Santa Fe, Oregon, and California trails. They moved West for more land, opportunities, and more. -
Manifest Destiny
The 19th century belief that the U.S. was destined by God o expand and spread democracy and capitalism across the North American Continent. -
Women's Rights
During the 1800's women played active roles in social reform and abolition movements, yet they still were 2nd to men in society. In 1848, during the Seneca Falls convention had issued a Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions which discussed the injustices faced by women and added "and women" to the famous quote: "All men are created equal" to the declaration of independence. -
The Gold Rush
As gold was found and the workers who found the gold was sworn to secrecy, word soon got out and about a year later 80,000 forty-niners, people who moved to the west to seek gold, were in California.
