Archduke Franz Ferdinand assassinated
Archduke Franz Ferdinand takes a visit to Sarajevo, Bosnia. while driving around Sarajevo with the top down in his limousine, the chauffuer spotted a small bomb come hurdling towards the Archduke and his wife. the driver steps on the gas and avoids it. after a meet and greet with the city officials, Ferdinand decides to go see the wounded from the bomb explosion, and on the way to the hospital the chauffeur takes a wrong turn and on the corner, Ferdinand is assassinated by Gavrilo Princip. -
WW1 starts
One month after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia. within one month, 6 different countries declared war on another country. -
Battle at Liege, battle 1 of WW1
The battle at Liege was the first battle of WW1. The Germans attacked the Belgums on the 5th of August and did not end until the Belgums surrendered on the 16th of August. The Germans attacked so they could get through to France to get the first attack. -
Austria-Hungary invades Russia
On August 10th Austria-Hungary invades Russia. Because of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, Serbia was viewed as a supporter of the assassination. Russia sworn to protect Serbia meaning Austria-Hungary would have to fight against Russian solders. -
Battle of the Marne
The First Battle of the Marne was a strategic victory for the Allies, pushing back the Germans 45 miles and saving Paris from being captured by the Germans. This allowed the French to continue fighting. However, the Germans still managed to seize a large portion of the industrial northeast of France, highlighting the battle's mixed results. in the end, the allies came through for a victory. -
Sinking of the Lusitania
on May 7th, 1915 the Germans attacked a British passenger ship with 123 American passengers. Germans claim that they thought the boat was carrying undercover military equipment, but many do not believe this. -
Battle at Verdun
the Battle of Verdun lasted 11 months. From February 21st to December 18th, 1916. Germans attacked Verdun on the western front in hopes to break French pride, as Verdun was a symbol of French pride. Both sides suffered a total of over 700,00 casualties. -
The battle at Somme
The battle at Somme started on the first of July 1916 and lasted until November 18th, 1916. The battle at Somme Is considered the bloodiest battle of WW1, with over 57,000 total casualties and more than 19,000 killed on the first day of battle. the British started the battle to take pressure off the French and begin wearing down the German army as part of a grand allied strategy. -

On the 18th of November, the battle at Somme was over. on the 15th of September tanks make their very first appearance on the battlefield. it was a barrage of 12 divisions of soldiers accompanied by 48 Mark I tanks. The British were able to advance some 1.5 miles doing this. despite the allied casualties the victory heavily damaged German forces and forced them to retreat. -
The Zimmermann telegram
on January 17 the Britians intercepted an encrypted message sent from German Foreign Secretary Arthur Zimmermann that was meant to be sent to Mexico that stated if the Americans were to enter the war, Mexico would want to ally with Germany and invade the states that were taken from Mexico by the US. -
America gets the message
On the first of March America got the message that the Germans wanted to have an ally with Mexico. Rightfully Mexico declined. This was America's last straw, and they were now convinced to join the war. -
Russian Revolutions
The Russian Revolution was a two-part event in 1917. The first revolution, in March, brought down the imperial government, ending centuries of imperial rule. The second, in October, saw the Bolsheviks, led by Lenin, take control, establishing a communist government. -
The Third Battle of Ypres
The Third Battle of Ypres, took place from July 31st to November 6th, 1917. The allies aimed to break through German lines in the Flanders region of Belgium. Over 100 days, the Allies advanced only about 5 miles, suffering more than 250,000 casualties. The battle became infamous for its horrific conditions, mud, and heavy losses, symbolizing the devastation caused by WWI. -
America joins the war
On the 4th of April Americans joined the war. This resulted in a total loss of 116,000 casualties and over 4 million recruits. America played a big part in the war, helping end the war and pushing out German forces from France -
Treaty of Versailles signed
On the 28th of July, the Treaty of Versailles is signed. With over 32 countries' representatives and "The big four". the big four were Lloyd George of Britain, Vittorio Emanuele Orlando of Italy, Georges Clemenceau of France, and Woodrow Wilson of the U.S. At the treaty the US and Italy left the peace treaty, leaving the work for France and Britain. At the conference, Woodrow Willson made 14 points, some of which made it into the treaty like limited military and territory changes.
