Unit 3.8 timeline of space history

  • Period: 1100 BCE to 1521 BCE

    Aztec new fire ceremony

The Aztecs practiced an ancient ritual called the new fire ceremony. The ritual was intended to renew the sun and ensure another 52 year cycle (Cartwright, 2016). It was important to the Aztecs as a religious ceremony because if the ceremony failed, so would their civilization.

    Mayans architecture

"Maya architecture is best characterized by the soaring pyramid temples and ornate palaces which were built in all Maya centres across Mesoamerica from El Tajin in the north to Copan in the south"(Cartwright, 2015). Something that I found surprising was that Maya architecture makes no discerning differences between religious buildings and non-religious buildings.

    First human in space

Yuri Aleksey Gagarin was the first ever human to launch into space at 27 years old. "On April 12, 1961, Vostok 1 lifted Yuri Gagarin into space, the first human being to travel there. His orbit, which lasted for an hour and 48 minutes, had a few unsettling moments. He lost radio contact with Earth for 23 minutes" (McNamee, 2021).
  • John Glenn

"On February 20, 1962, NASA and Colonel John Glenn accomplished the flight of Friendship 7, a spacecraft that made three orbits of the Earth in five hours" (History.com Editors, 2009).
  • First woman in space

"On June 16, 1963, the Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman to fly in space" (Weitekamp,2013). Her mission was less then three days.
  • Period: to

    First man on the moon

Neil Armstrong stepped on the moon on July 20th, 1969 during the Apollo 11 mission. "Armstrong and Aldrin landed on the moon, with only 25 seconds of fuel left" (Dobrijevic, Howell, 2022).
  • Period: to

First evenT that may have happened if the the first man on the moon was different

It was the United States who had the first man to walk on the Moon. Apollo 11 blasted off from the Kennedy Space Center in Orlando, Florida, on July 16, 1969, with 500 to 600 million people watching it on their television screens. The Apollo 11 mission had aboard astronauts Neil Armstrong, Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin, and Michael Collins. Neil Armstrong was the first to step on the moon and said there was a huge lake and the moon had breathable air.
  • Today if the moon was inhabitable

In 2022 Elon musk was the first human to inhabit the moon and build a house. He is now working on making it possible for everyone to live on the moon.
