Fugitive slave act passed
This act allowed slave owners to rcapture african americans who they believe to have escaped them. This was a big deal because every law that was like this would make it harder and harder to abolish slavery. -
Election of 1796
John Adams, a federalist, was elected, Thomas Jefferson was elected vice. This was the last election where the runner up would be vice president, from now on the president would chose his own running mate. -

This case, origionally a petition by Marbury, allowed the Supreme court allow to rule on weather a law passed by congress was constitutional or not. -
Louisiana Purchase
America agrees to purchase the Louisiana territory for $15 million. This doubled the size of the untied states. -
Thomas Jefferson Relected
After a very sucessful 1st term, Jefferson was relected, but his 2nd term was not going to go well... He defeated Pinckey easily. -
Embargo Act
Jefferson started the embargo act, wich restricted all foreign trade. The act was aimed at damaging the british economy by reducing their trade, but there was little imbact as the british ended up looking elsewhere. This only hurt the US. -
James Madison elected president
Ending Jefferson's disasterous 2nd term, Madison (a Democrat-republican) defeated Pinckey (a federalist). -
War of 1812 begins
US declares war on the British. This is due to several reasons, such as the british continuing to capture American ships, an American attempt to damage the British economy, and an attempt to capture canada. -
Madison Relected
In the shadow of the war, Madison is relected by a 50.4% popular vote, a very close margin. -
Treaty of Ghent
Basicly just ends the war, does nothing else. -
