Treaty of Versailles Signed With Germany.
It was he treaty that contained the terms of Germany's punishment. This includes the war guilt clause, which blamed Germany for the war, disarmament, reparations, and other things. This caused Germany to lose a lot of territory and its power status and it devastated their economy and was restricted from doing a lot of things.
This is a event is a prime example of dissatisfaction with the treaties because Germany was got it the worst out of all its allies receiving the worst punishments. -
The Aaland Islands Dispute
A dispute between Finland and Sweden over the Aaland Islands. Sweden wanted control since the population were mostly Swedish but was argued that the Islands were Finland's territory. The League intervened and ruled that the islands were to be under Finish sovereignty and that the civil rights of the Swedish population would be ensured.
This was an important event for the League because they successfully prevented a possible war between Finland and Sweden. -
Washington Naval Conference
This was the USA's way of promoting disarmament without joining the League. The main point of the this conference was to prevent a dangerous arms race between Britain, the USA, and Japan. The conference resulted in the signing of the 4 power, 5 power, and 9 power treaties.
This was an important conference that prevented a possible arms race and improved international relations such as Sino-Japanese relations. -
Genoa Conference
The conference which was called up by Llyod George was meant to discuss the recovery of the European economy and Franco-German reparations. Germany and the USSR were suspicious of Llyod George's plans. This resulted in Germany and the USSR leaving which led to the failure of the conference.
This event caused international tensions to remain high because the conference did not even accomplish anything and caused more distrust among the European powers. -
Rapallo Pact Between Germany and The USSR
Was a secret agreement between the USSR and Germany because of suspicions of Llyod George's motives during the Genoa Conference. This resulted from the failure of the Genoa Conference which was caused by Germany and Russia leaving it. This agreement allowed improved relations between the two and for Germany to become less isolated.
Tension remained high because the pact caused other powers to become suspicious of the agreement and also because of communism in Russia which Germany disagreed with -
Ruhr Crisis
The Ruhr Crisis was caused when France and Belgium invaded the Ruhr when Germany refused to meet their demands for reparations. The Ruhr was a an industrial part of Germany and the taking of this caused hyperinflation. This further increased tensions between Germany and France since it did mor damage to the German economy.
This is an important event because it was one thing that caused tensions also because Franc's invasion was disapproved of. -
Corfu Crisis
Was caused when an Italian general and his staff were ambushed and killed by Greek bandits. This resulted in the invasion of Corfu when Greece rejected some of the demands from the Italian government. The Greeks went to the League and decided that Greece should pay 50 million lira as compensation to Italy.
Although the League intervened tensions remained high in he area because the many border disputes in the area. -
Dawes PLan
Was a plan to resolve German issues with German reparations. It did not change he total Germany owed, but was to receive a loan from the USA and the amount paid would slowly increase. Germany disliked this plan because it interfered with their railways and France accepted it to escape possible isolation.
The Dawes plan was not a very successful attempt at improving international relations since again Germany did not have a choice and disliked the plan. A quick fix in a way. -
Locarno Treaties
Were a series of treaties used to improve international relations. The Locarno treaties were widely accepted and the wide support for it was known as the Locarno Spirit. Two major things that it did was provided France with a sense of security and improved relations between Germany and the Western powers.
This was a significant event because the Locarno Treaties was very effective in relieving tensions in Europe at the time proving to be successful. -
Young Plan
Was the replacement of the Dawes Plan, which led to the reducing of German reparations from 132 billion to 112 billion. Was accepted by Britain, France and Germany, and Britain and France agreed to withdraw from the Rhineland in 1930. The evacuation of the Rhineland made Germany more willing to sign the Young Plan.
Was a very important attempt at improving international relations since it actually worked and was better received than the Dawes Plan.
