Maya is founded

2000 BCE

somewhere between 7000-2000 BCE Maya was formed. It was located in what is now Southern Mexico. It was one of the first and biggest civilizations in the Americas

Greek dark ages

1200 BCE

the Greek dark ages were a transitional period from the year 1200-800 BCE. This age was after the tribes that lived in the Greek Peninsula and before ancient Greece.

Ancient Greece

776 BCE

It is unknown the exact year ancient Greece was founded. The empire started with tribes living on the Greek peninsula. The first recorded event in its history was the first Olympic games in 776 BCE.

Homer contributes to early Greek culture

700 BCE

During late 8th century - early 7th century Homer wrote poems which greatly influenced Greek culture. He wrote the Iliad which was a story about Achilles. He then wrote a sequel to the Iliad called "The odyssey" which was about Odysseus' journey home from the war.

Greek theater

700 BCE

during around 700 BCE the Greeks developed a theatre culture. This led to the creation of many plays which influenced the culture of Greece. Modern day western theatre has a lot to owe to Greek theatre.

Persian empire formed

559 BCE

Persian empire formed in 559 BCE. Early Persians were nomadic people. Empire was located in southwestern Iran

Persian empire expands

539 BCE

Empire defeated the Babylonians and expanded. Cyrus the great created the Achaemenid dynasty and unified Persia. The empire expanded throughout the middle east and was eventually almost the size of the United states.

Darius the great begins rule

522 BCE

In 522 BCE Darius the great became the third king of the Achaemenid dynasty. He divided the empire into provinces each governed by satraps. During his rule the empire reached its peak.

democracy is invented

508 BCE

in Greece during 508 BCE the first form of democracy was created. Male citizens in Athens could help decide how the government runs things. This paved the way for modern day countries like the United states.

Zoroastrianism is founded

501 BCE

The religion was founded sometime in 6th century BCE (600-501). It was the first monotheistic religion in the world. Also had similar beliefs to Christianity and Judaism.

Persian wars

499 BCE

The Persian wars were a series of wars between Persia and Greece. It started because of Greeks starting revolts in Persian territory. The wars lasted from 499-479 BCE and the Greeks won.

Golden age of Greece

450 BCE

After the Persian war ended the golden age of Greece began. Its considered the golden age because many achievements were accomplished during the time. The City of Athens was the center of the golden age.

Peloponnesian war

431 BCE

The war began in 431 BCE because of disagreements between the cities of Sparta and Athens. Sparta's superior military strength allowed them to win the war. After the war Athens and Sparta became allies once again.

Famous Greek philosophers

400 BCE

around 430-330 BCE many famous Greek philosophers emerged. People such as Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle pondered many things. These philosophers dealt with ideas such as math, reason, music, logic and rational thinking.

Alexander the great rules Greece

336 BCE

Alexander the great turned Greece into one of the biggest empires in history. He conquered most of the middle east and some of Asia. His rule ended when he died in 323 BCE.

Persia falls

334 BCE

In 334 BCE the Persian empire fell. Xerxes tried and failed to invade Greece which left the empire poor and weak. It was then one of the many civilizations conquered by Alexander the great.

fall of Greece

146 BCE

During 146 BCE Ancient Greece was conquered. They were conquered by the Roman empire and eventually were overtaken. This eventually led to their downfall.

Mayan achievements

during 200-900 CE the Mayan empire accomplished many achievements. They made many advancements in art, architecture, mathematics and astronomy. They eventually fell soon after.

Mayan classic age collapse

around the year 900 CE the "classic age" of Maya came to an end. It is not entirely known what caused it but there are many possible causes. A few cities lived on until Europeans came to the Americas.
