1970- Introduction to Boeing 747 'jumbo jet'
The jumbo jet is a massive, long- range body aircraft and transport plane made in the US by ' Boeing Commercial Airplanes'. BA decided to retire their Boeing 747 in July 2020 due to COVID 19. -
1974- Clarkson
A very successful package tour operator company called ' Clarkson' ran into severe financial issues. Eventually, a company called ' Courtline' took over. 2 years later the company went bankrupt with at least £7million in debt to 100,000 guests. As you can imagine this has impacted the tourism industry back in the day, in a negative way. People lost so much money, time and effort with this company to just end up disappointed. -
1976- Concorde flight prices
Concorde is a tailless aircraft design which only permitted 92-128 passengers on board. The prices to fly on a Concorde were ridiculously expensive. An example of this is: a flight from London and Washington was £431, in today's money that is £2,431. There were flights with breakfast included from Dallas to London, which was £975 ONE WAY, in today's money that is £4,181. -
1980- World Travel Market opening in London
An international trade show for the travel industry titled World Travel Market was first exhibited in the UK in London's Olympia in 1980 before moving to Earl's Court in 1992. For the first time, half of BTA's (Business Travel Association) overall marketing budget came from collaborative partnerships with trade, local governments, and regions. -
1980- Sir Tim Berners- Lee invented the internet
Beginning in 1980, Sir Tim Berners-Lee worked worked as a software engineer for Particle Physics in Geneva, Switzerland; known as CERN. Lee wanted to find a easier way to organise his work, he did this by building a software programme called 'Enquire'. He invented a new way of finding files by creating a sort of "hypertext" notepad that allowed the words in a document to be connected to other documents on the computer. His ideas expanded and he built different web pages. -
1985- The launch of Ryanair
A well-known successful company called 'Ryanair' was launched. It is one of the top low-cost airlines in Europe. Since its launch it has become a very popular company all over the world. It began in 1985 with only 15-seats transporting passengers between Waterford. As this airline become so successful a lot of people travel with Ryanair, this has impacted tourism in such a positive way as it allows travellers to find cheap holidays and visit nice destinations. -
1990- Gulf War Began
The Gulf War, which started in 1990, witnessed the largest deployment of British forces since the Second World War. The Persian Gulf War, sometimes referred to as the First Gulf War, First Iraq War, or Kuwait War, was a conflict that began as a result of the actions of Saddam Hussein, the Iraqi president. This war ended in 1991. -
1995- EasyJet launched
EasyJet is an international low-cost airline group with its main office at London Luton Airport. It runs domestic and international scheduled flights on 927 routes in more than 34 countries through its connected airlines, EasyJet UK, EasyJet Switzerland, and EasyJet Europe. EasyJet has become a very successful and popular airline that a lot of people use all around the world. This has had a massive positive impact in the tourism industry as a lot of people travel with EasyJet and its not pricey. -
1997- Death of Princess Diana
A member of the British royal family, Diana, Princess of Wales. She was the mother of Prince William and Harry and King Charles III's first wife. Died on the 31st of August 1997 from a car crash in the Pont de l'Alma tunnel in Paris, France. -
2000- TripAdvisor began
TripAdvisor is a website where anyone, specially travellers can leave their real feedback on a company, whether its a hotel, restaurant, city, anything at all.
It is a very popular and helpful website that is being used more and more on a daily, its perfect for travellers because it allows you to look at other peoples opinion before visiting that place. This has impacted the tourism industry positively as its used as motivator for people who like travelling. -
2001- 9/11
Thousands of people were killed on Tuesday, September 11, 2001, when suicide bombers hijacked US passenger aircraft and crashed them into two New York towers. People who were on the higher stories of the buildings were trapped by the fire, which covered the city in smoke. 110-story buildings collapsed in less than two hours.. In total 2,977 people lost their lives from this event. This has affected the tourism industry as after this horrific event people were scared to travel due to terrorism. -
2008- Global Recession
A financial disaster happened all around the world in 2008. A lot of businesses struggled and collapsed, and travellers had no money, which meant no holidays were being sold by plenty of agencies. However, due to this, staycations increased by 17% and outbound travel decreased. The number of British tourists travelling abroad did not begin to increase again until 2014, a year in which both domestic travel and international travel increased. This impacted the tourism industry negatively. -
2012- Visit Britain released first statistics
Together with VisitWales and Visit Scotland, VisitEngland published the first-ever statistics on day trips inside the UK. According to the report, British citizens spent £54 billion on 1.5 billion day excursions to the UK in 2011. Brits spent £44 billion on 1.3 billion journeys in England. Everyday, this statistics just keep growing and growing which means in the future the travel and tourism industry in the UK increases massively. This has a very positive impact on all business in the UK. -
2014- Ukraine war began
Since February 2014, there has been a conflict between Russia and Ukraine, this turned into a horrible war which unfortunately is still happening. This affects the tourism industry businesses negatively because it has reduced the number of travellers from North America, Asia, Russia, Belarus and Ukraine.

2019- COVID-19 pandemic
This pandemic is known as the coronavirus, that caused so many deaths and had a massive impact in the whole world including the travel and tourism industry as the whole world went in lockdown which meant nobody could travel. The symptoms of this virus included high temperature, shortness of breath, body aches, loss of taste and a lot more. In 2020 this pandemic killed 6,639,715 globally. Everyone was forced to go into a lockdown meaning nobody could leave their house. -
2020- Brexit
Brexit was the British government's decision to leave the European Union. Brexit had a massive negative impact in the UK travel and industry because the value of the £ has dropped immensely, food prices have gone up by a lot and this the biggest impact on local businesses. Brexit has made it harder for people to get goods and services from the UK to the EU.
