Great Southwest Railroad Strike
The Knights of Labor struck against the Union Pacific and Missouri Pacific railroads for better wages, better work conditions, and better hours. Thousands of workers from across five states joined the strike. Jay Goud, the owner, hired non-union workers which led to the stop of the strike, because no one was paying attention to it anymore. -
Gomper Founds AFL
After the Haymarket incident, Samuel Gomper creates the American Federation of Labor. Trade unions that would become a huge involvement in the labor industry the next century to come. -
The Sherman Anti-trust Act
This act was created to block Monopolies,this was very beneficial for employers later. -
Ludlow Massacre Strike
Coal miners were going on strike for improved working conditions and better wages. The Union came together and camped out. They were then confronted by a militia, then moments later they were fired at by the militia. Over 60 people were killed, and the strike came to an end. It brought attention to the coal miners. -
The Great Depression
Union working were gradually decreasing in the 1930's. It was going bad for union workers, until the New Deal came along. This and the Wagner Act are what quickly made unions grow once again. -
Wagner Act
Gave employees the self-right to join or be involved with a union. It was their personal decision and they were not allowed to be forced to join anything. -
Bituminous Coal Strike
On April fools day over 400,000 coal miners got together to strike for better safer conditions, health benefits, and better pay. The Union got together as america was recovering form WW2, when President Truman was still president. He noticed their actions and offered them a settlement, which they refused. They were then fined 3.5 million dollars and were forced to agree tot the settlement. The strike was then over. -
Steel Strike
Profits in the steel industry were doing amazing. This being so, 500,000 workers came together nation wide to start a strike for better wages. The United steelworkers of America represented them. While this was happening, the management was working against the union to close a contract which protected the workers hours and jobs. In the end, the union got higher wages and still had the contract secured. -

Prohibits wage disparity based on sex -
Civil Rights Act
Prohibited discrimination based on sex, color, religion, race, and national region.
