The Haymarket Riot
There was a peaceful rally going on in Haymarket Square. They were striking against an 8 hour day and the killing by the police the day before. Then someone threw a dynamite bomb into the crowd killing police and it turned into a massacre. -
Homestead Strike
The Homestead strike was an industrial lockout that ended in a battle between workers and security agents. The Amalgamated Association of Iron and Steel Workers were mad because they said that Carnegie Steel had broken its contract. So the workers barricaded their way into the factory. Eventually a militia showed up and killed and fought their way in. The final result was a major defeat for the Union. -
Steel Strike of 1919
Workers fo the US steel corperation organized a strike under the American Federation of labor. This wasto strike against poor conditions for workers. As a result nearly half the steel industry shut down. But company owners turned people from the Unions and this cause strike failure and a absence of Unions from the steel industry for 15 years -
Great Depression
The Great Depression knocked the labor unions off balance. The discontent of the industrial worker combined with the new deal hurt the labor unions. In 1933 the labor unions was down 2 million for the previous decade -
Norris LaGuardia Act
Before this act workers were being forced to sign contracts so they wouldn't join labor unions and fight for there rights as a worker. But the workers did not like this so this act was passed and it banned yellow dog contracts. This meant that you couldn't force your workers not to join unions. -
The New Deal
When Roosevelt was elected into office he anted to end the great depression so started trying to fix things. Because of this h set up acts lik the industrial recovery act to give workers rights. but this this hurt older people. people with no retirement were fired when they couldn't keep up with the production rates. -
Textile workers strike of 1934
Textile workers set out to strike in response to long hours and low wages. 400,000 people walked out in 20 days. But lack of outside support forced the strike to end and unions were hated and blacklisted for years -
National Relations Labor Act
This act protected the rights of employees and employers so they could encourage collective bargaining, and to curtail certain private sector labor and management practices, which can harm the general welfare of workers, businesses and the U.S. economy. -
Fair Labor Standards Act
This Act established minimum wages, overtime pay, record keeping, and youth employment standards for workers in America. this act effected full time and part time workers in private sectors as well as in federal, state, and local government. -
World War 1
When the war stated the US govermnt recruited almost all of is men to go fight. because of this their jobs were filled by women and African Americans. this caused a need for labor unions because both of these group of people were greatly mistreated and hated so they were paid unfairly.
