Haymarket Square Riot
A labor protest rally turned into a riot after someone threw a bomb at a police officer. 8 people died:7 police officers and one other person- 8 people were convicted as part of the bombing although there was little evidence, People viewed this riot as a reverse effect for the labor movement. -
Sherman Antitrust Act
Forbid any restraint of commerce across state lines. Courts ruled that boycotts and union strikes were covered by this law. This was the first major piece of legislation. Passed by liberal reformers. -
Homestead Strike
Battle between strikers and private security agents. This was an industrial lockout, and it was also called the homestead massacre. One of the most serious disputes in U.S labor history. This was a major defeat for the union. -
Pullman Strike
This was a nationwide railroad strike that shutdown alot of the nations freight and passenger traffic. Emplyees were striking from the recent reduction of their wages and hours. This strike included 4000 employees of the Pullman company. -
Great Depression
The Great Depression was the longest-lasting economic issue in history of the world. This began after the stockmarket crashed. It wiped out millions of investors and higher people in the industrialized world. 1933 was the peak where about 13-15 million people were unemployed. -
Yellow Dog Contracts Outlawed
In 1932, yellow dog contracts were outlawed under the Norris-LaGuardia Act. This contract is an agreement between the employee and employer where the employee agrees not to be a member of a labor union. These were outlawed to prevent employees from working for other employers in the same industry. -
The New Deal
A series of programs enacted in the U.S between 1933-1938. President at the time was Franklin D. Roosevelt. These programs were in response to the great depression. Focused on the "3 R's" :Relief, recovery, & reform. -
The Fair Labor Standards Act
This law establishes our minimum wage & overtime pay. This established child labor laws and how many hours children can work at each age. This act is also referred to as the wages and hours bill. This was originally drafted in 1932. -
World War 2
This was the second world war, which occured during 1939-1945. Related conflicts occured earlier, but this is the beginning date for the war. This is the most widespread war in history. Approx. 1 million killed. -
Anti-union Taft-Hartley Act
This law made major changes to the Wagner Act. This act was amended to protect employees' rights from unfair practices. The Taft- Hartley act made 6 additional unfair labor practices. -
New York City Teachers' strike
This Strike dragged on from May-November of 1968 involving the schoolboard and the neighborhoods of Brooklyn and the federation of teachers. The teachers went on strike when the schoolboard dismissed teachers and administrators. This shut don schools for 36 days. It also increased racial tensions between blacks and jews.
