    Kamehameha ruled his kindom for about 10 years. During that time he inovated many things including laws. His life lasted for about 60 years.
  • Meeting Captain Cook

    Meeting Captain Cook
    During that time Cook needed supplies and he saw Hawaii. When he landed there he was treated like a god because they thought he was Lono. He traded various items with the Hawaiians like iron. The Hawaiians gave Cook in return gave him supplies and food. As a result the Hawaiians and Kamehameha became a stronger warrior civilization.
  • Getting Muskets and Cannons

    Getting Muskets and Cannons
    After Captain Cook came to Hawaii more Europeans came to Hawaii and brought firearms with them. John Young and Isaac Davis were captured and they provided Kamehameha with cannons and muskets. From then on Hawaii and England traded with each other. With Kamehameha's new army he was able to conquer the Hawaiian islands. They used rocks as ammunition for their cannons.

    Conquering Big Island
    Before conquering the other islands Kamhameha had to defeat Keoua Kuahu'ula: his cousin. Kamehameha knew he couldn't defeat Keoua so he had to have the gods on his side. After a battle Keoua returned to his side of the island and as one of the three groups passed Kilauea and it erupted. It killed many of Keoua's people. After that he conqered Big Island.

    Conquering  Maui and the Islands Around it
    After conqering the Big Island Kamehameha conquered Maui, Moloka'i, and Lana'i. With the help of muskets and cannons from the British and George Vancouver Kamehameha expanded his rule. After conquering Maui, Moloka'i, and Lana'i Kamehameha went to Oahu and conquered it during the battle of Nu'uanu. During that battle Kamehameha's army pushed back Kalanikupule's troops to Pali Lookout and several hundred warriors off the cliff and died. After the battle the chief was sacrificed to the gods.

    Making an Agreement with Kamuali'i
    After conquering the other islands Kamehameha couldn't take over Kauai. However Kamehameha made an agreement with Kamuali'i: the head chief of Kauai. Kamehameha proposed that Kamuali'i we're to rule until his death. But Kamehameha would rule over the Hawaiian islands. Kamuali'i agrees to this and Kamehameha became the first person to unite the Hawaiian islands. It is said that other chiefs tried to poison Kamuali'i for agreeing to the arrangement.

    King Kamehameha Unites the Hawaiian Islands
    As king of the Hawaiian islands Kamehameha made new laws. One of which was that only Hawaiian people were to own land. Another law was the law of the Splintered Paddle, a law stating that everyone should feel safe. The history of the law is that Kamehameha walked ashore and saw something that he thought belonged to him, so he ran up to a man and took it a way from him. The man the smashed a paddle on Kamehamaha's head. The man was brought before Kamehameha to be punished, but got land instead.

    Sandalwood became a major demand around the world. It's wood has a natural pleasant smell and no one really knows how trders found out about the wood. In exchange for sandalwood Hawaii got various items such as silk, beads, alcohol, and nails from various traders. Also Kamehameha declaired a trading monopoly and when the supply of sandalwood got low Kamehameha put kapu on the young trees

    During the reign of Liholiho, Kapu was gotten rid of and lots of people were converted to christianity. During Liholiho's reign epidemics hit Hawaii and many Hawaiians died, including himself.

    After Kamehameha's death his son Liholiho took his father's role as head chief of Hawaii. However during Liholiho's crowning, Ka'ahumanu: Kamehameha's favortite wife, asked Liholiho to rule together with the same amount of power. He agreed and Ka'ahumanu became prime minister. Ka'ahumanu didn't like the Kapu system so she plotted to get rid of it. She did this by pursuading Liholiho to eat with her. That offically ended Kapu because people saw that Liholiho wasn't being punished by the gods.

    Ka'ahumanu's reign was a long and productvie one. She persuaded Liholiho to get rid of Kapu by sitting with her son while they ate. She also became a storng ruler and advised Liholiho as Prime Minister. Her reign ended as she became very ill and died at her home on Manoa Valley.

    When the first missionaries came to Hawaii they were afraid of the Hawaiians not accepting them. When they finally were allowed to build in Hawaii they built schools, houses, and churches. They wanted to get rid of the old Hawaiian religion and did so with the help of Liholiho getting rid of Kapu, To furthermore rid the hawaiians of their old religion, they taught the Christian religion to hawaiian childern.

    Whaling became a popular trade item in the 1830's due to the lack of oil. Whaling is a dangerous and unpredictable due to the harpooning of the animal. Most of thet rade depended on the prices for whale oil. The whaling trade ended when people found out that you could drill for oil in the ground.

    With the abundance of sugarcane, a demand of sugar was made and plantations were made. The person who actually created the first plantation was a chinese man. The Hawaiians didn't use this resource before because they didn't know of it's importance.

    A mahele is a division in which one was intitled to land. Individual mahele were archived in the Mahele book. The king set apart larger peices of land to benefit the government and his heirs. These were known as ¨crown lands¨. These lands were sold and mortgaged until 1865.

    As the demand for sugarcane went up so did the demand for workers on the plantations. Imagrants from China, Japan, and the Filipenes came to Hawaii to work on the plantations.
