The beggining
Najmah wakes up in her village of Golestan. She goes into the fields and gets some water and feeds her goats. This is what she does everyday. Her mother is pregnant and do any week now. Once she gets done with her work she goes home. Then she sees the Taliban pull up. They come and take her brother, Nur and her father. -

Nusrat
Nusrat goes to University Town, Pakistan and goes into her mother and sister-in-laws house. She brings her sister-in-law some persimmons and she thanks her for them.She goes inside and starts talking to her family. Then everything goes serious and the young ones are sent to there rooms while they talk to see if they have heard of anything about Nusrat's husband who has been gone for a while. -
Najmah
Najmah's mom cries for the better half of two days. Then one her neighbors invites her to walk with them to Pakistan. She says no that she must stay with her mother while she is pregnant and that she must take care of her animals.Once her neighbor leaves she sees her Uncle who she hates coming down the path. Her Uncle wants nothing with her, but her land. Once Najmah goes to do her chores the next day her mother goes into laber -
Nusrat
Nusrat gets a letter from her mother about how she can't believe she converted to Islam. She gets these kind of leters usually every month. After she finished teaching for the day she invited her family and some of her friends to come to her house and watch the meteor shower. -
Najmah
Najmah adores her little brother. They decided to name him Habib. It seems no matter how much grass she cuts for her goats they still are so skinny you can see their ribs. Uncle comes back again and still tries to take the land from Najmah, but she refuses. Then Najmah goes to the top of the hill while her mother is hanging the clothes. Then F-15s come streaming through the sky dropping bombs. one hits near Najmah and she is thrown. The next kills her mother and baby Habib in the house. -
Nusrat
During school she has the kids sit on cots hung between trees in front of the Persimmon tree. It is the end of school so the kids are packing up she informs them that tommorow she will teach them about the number 6. Then she tells them that on their way out they can grab a persimmon. The next day she also taught them about the planets. She also talks about how it is dangerous for a girl to be alone on the streets. -
Najmah
She goes to help her family after the bombing, but finds that Habib and Mada-jan are dead. Then her neighbors brother Akhtar takes Najmah with his family to Peshawar, Pakistan. They travel a long time till they get to the Pakistan border. -
Nusrat
She starts talking about how her old name used to be Elaine and she talks about how she met Faiz in a robbery. Faiz converts her to Islam and she talks about how she says her prayers every morning and how her life is so simple now -
Najmah
Najmah wakes up in her refugee camp and hears two men arguing over the price of some apples. She decides she needs to at least look for Nur and Baba-jan. So she hopped into the back of the truck and hid herself under the canvas. On her way to Peshawar, Pakistan her driverv is shot and thrown out by bandits and they drove the rest of the way. Finnally, she gets to Peshawar and she steals some food and sleeps in a store stall for the night. -
Nusrat
Two of her students leave because some of the fighting down there has stopped. Then Nusrat inspires Amina's mother, Mansoora, She worrys that Faiz is dead because she has heard no word from him and the fighting is over. -
Najmah/Nusrat
Najmah wakes up and gets out of her stall to go to the refugee camp near by in search of Nur and Baba-jan and work during the mean time. And the Malek showed her around the refugee camp. -
Najmah/Nusrat
The Malek of the refugee camp brings a small boy (Najmah) to the Persimmon Tree School. Nusrat brings him in and feeds the child. Najmah still goes with the act that she is a boy named Shaheed but Nusrat sees the calluces on her hands and realizes that he is a she. Nusrat gives her a big cot to sleep in and some girl clothes to wear in public. The next dcay she gets her new clothes and breckfast. And Najmah realizes she does not like Nusrats maid who is constantly mean to her. -
Nusrat/Najmah
Najmah tells Nusrat her story and that her brother Habib and her mom have died. Then her Uncle comes and requests to take her home. He says her brother and father are dead. Najmah does not go. Nusrat later that night finally knows that Faiz will not be coming back. She cries herself to sleep. -
Nusrat/Najmah
Najmah realizes that Nusrat is in lots of pain and has not slept for many nights. She cries every night hoping he will come home, but she nows that he will not be coming home. Nusrat tells herself that she needs to help Najmah find her family as much as she can. -
Nusrat/Najmah
Nusrat has taught Najmah how to speak english and how to right it as well. She is practicing this when Najmah's Uncle comes back demanding that Najmah come home with her this instant. Najmah goes and hides and Uncle does not get her once again. Nusrat invites Najmah to come and live in the United States with her, Najmah says no that she must go and take back her farmland. Then suddenly Nur shows up and Najmah is screaming with joy she goes and hugs him and talks to him for the rest of the night. -
Nusrat/Najmah
Nur, Najmah, and Nusrat all go to University town for the rest of the week. Najmah and Nur continue to talk for many days and then Nur remembers that he heard of Faiz dieing in a bomb explosian so he tells Nusrat. Then Nur and Najmah get the news that they will be escorted back to their home to continue their lives. The End
