Civil war begins
Slavery has caused a split in the USA. The North thinks it should be outlawed. The South thinks it should stay since they prosper so much thanks to it. The war then is started. -
Union soldiers come to Vicksburg
Union soldiers appear at Vicksburg and request them to surrender. The Rebels refused. The Union soldiers then fire upon Vicksburg and are forced to retreat when the Vicksburg cannon fires upon them. -
The Union tries twice
A Union boat fleet come and shell the city about Mid-day. They stopped late that night, so sleep visited few of the townspeople. -
The Vicksburg Christmas Eve ball
Vicksburg had a ball every Christmas Eve, and during the ball in 1862 the Union boat fleet had decided to edge closer to the town. They started the battle 4 days after the ball. -
Union troops get back-ups
General Grant's troops joins General Sherman's troops and Grant's eldest son, Fred, joined the troops as well. -
Union boats run down the river
The Union boat fleet passes the Vicksburg waterfront, while only losing 1 boat. This is their first sign of sucess so far. -
Port Gibson
Grant had started his way to victory and tries to take Port Gibson. He tells Fred to stay aboard the ship, but Fred disobeys his father and goes to battle with the other soldiers. -
The taking of Jackson
Union soldiers fought General Johnston outside of Jackson,Mississippi. The fighting was so close together that the men would from time to time use their guns as clubs. Eventually, the Union pushed the Rebels back to the outskirts of Jackson. -
The burning of Jackson
Grant ordered the Unions to burn anything that could contribute to Vicksburg during the war. In result, much of the town was burned. -
The war halfway
General Pemberton and Grant met halfway between Vicksburg and Jackson. They then lined up on opposite sides of the land and charged at each other. This battle was known as the Battle of Champion's Hill, which was the bloodiest battle of the Vicksburg campaign. -

The Union started to shell and starve the people of Vicksburg on the 18 of May and the Rebels surrendered on the 4th of July. -
Assault
Union soldiers tried to force their way to Vicksburg, but they were forced to retreat. -
Surrender terms
Pemberton called his generals together to decide what to do. He then writes a letter to Grant asking him to discuss surrender terms. -
The Rebels in Vicksburg surrender
General Pemberton and his army are humiliated, but they can no longer stand the starvation and thirst. They are forced to surrender. -
Civil war ends
The civil war ended and most of the South was left in ruins.
