Meiji Period 1868-1912
Before the year 1853, Japan was a very isolated country that didn't allow foreign influence. Because of this modernization of Western countries that occurred during the Industrial Revolution was not a reality for them. During the Meiji Period Japan was more open the foreigners, through this Japan industrialized itself rapidly. By World War I Japan was established as a world power. -
Attemot to over throw Korean Government
Pro- Japanese reformers attempted to over throw the Korean Government , nevertheless they were stopped by Chinese troops. They attempted this aggression becasue Korea being Japans neighbor and their coal and iron resources. -
Japan Declares Victory
After the Korean Government was assassinated by Chinese opressors, tension arose between Japan and the Chinese. This resulted in the declaration of the First Sino-Japanese War in August of 1894. After Japans vistory in 1895 the Chinese, in order to appease Japan gave them Korea and Taiwan and agreed to pay a large compensation. -
Japan Declares War on Russia
After hematic battles known as the Russo-Japanese War, Japan claimed another victory. The war ended in September of 1905. Being the first Asian country to defeat a European country they were established as a major world power. -
Booming Economy: 1930's
Japans increasing population and its change from a feudal > agriculturan > to industrial modern nation left them facing more challenges. During the Great Depression many nations reduced international trade, causing Japan to look toward expansionism. They also felt the European colonization of Asia should end. -
Invation of Manchuria
Japan was now reliant on foreign trade, therefor the need for new sources of raw materials and food to feed huge populations they invaded Manchuria and had most controll by 1932. The weak legue of nations failed to punish the Japanese aggressors. -
Japan Invades China
The war was the result of a decades-long Japanese aiming to dominate China politically and militarily and to acquire its vast raw materials and other economic resources, essentially food and labour. -
Attack on Pearl Harbour
It was a surprise military strike conducted by the Imperial Japanese Navy against the United States naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. This led to the United States' entry into World War II.The attack was intended as a defensive action in order to keep the U.S. Pacific Fleet from interfering with military actions the Empire of Japan was planning in Southeast Asia against overseas territories
