Bob Marley is the most influential and popular reggae artist of all time. He was also considered a Rastafarian prophet to many. His music made a great impact on not only Jamaicans, but people all around the world. His music preached of peace, love and unity due to the violence and racism that was around him. He organized the Smile Jamaica concert. He is still viewed a prophet, hero and icon in Jamaica and by many in other countries. -
Reggae is born
Reggae is basically the child of two other music genres, ska and rock steady, which were both very popular in Jamaica at the time. A 1968 single by Toots and the Maytals, "Do the Reggay", was the first popular song to use the word reggae, effectively naming the genre. -
Reggae goes global
Bob Marley had spread his music on a global scale. Most popular in Great Britain, United States and Africa. Reggae became an international symbol of the Rastafarian movement and spread its gospel throughout the regions. -
Smile Jamaica concert
Bob Marley & The Wailers host this concert to bring the people of Jamaica together. It was said to be free or at least very cheap to get in because Bob believed more people would turn up this way. This concert comes 2 days after Bob Marley and some of his band members were shot because they were seen as too political. He played a 90 minute show with 80 000 people in attendance. He brought up both leaders of the rival political parties and made them hold hands as a sign of unity for the people. -
Rasta Renaissance
In the 1990s, the dance and music scene was primarily focused on the topics of violences, guns and sex which proved to be too much for some individuals. A large group of musicians went back to their Rastafarian roots and brought the messages of reggae back. This movement was gradual but the effects were long-term. -

YG Marley's Hit
YG Marley is one of Bob Marley's grandchildren. In 2023 he released a song called Praise Jah In The Moonlight. Reggae had decreased significantly throughout the 21st century but remained fairly popular with Jamaicans. This song brought the love for reggae back on a global scale which proves how important reggae is for the Rastafarians and Jamaicans. YG Marley even sampled one of his grandfather's songs for this hit to commemorate the Jamaican legend. -
