European settlers arrive in America
The first European settlers to arrive in America were not the British, but the Spanish. During that time period the Spanish had dominated most things in Eurpoe and were discovering the new land beofre other countries. -

Colonial America had several attributes that made is so special. The people who made it that way were the European settlers, Native Americans, and the Africans brought by the Europeans. -

Europeans and Native Americans meet
The first to meet the Native Americans were the Spanish as well, but the first Native Americans the British met were the Algonkain tribe. The settlers and the Native Americans were at peace for a short time, but coexistance was not easy to maintain, and failed. -
the first African American was brought to the U.S.
The first Africans to be brought to the U.S. were intented to be used as slaves, and started the slave trade all across the world. The significance is that it is claimed that slavery is what caused the Civil War. -
House of Burgesses was created
The House of Burgesses was the first legislative group to grow and become important/sucessful in the new colonies. Americans had 157 years to practice democracy beofre it was really put to use through the House of Burgesses. Definition: an assembly of elected representatives from Virginia that met from 1643 to 1776. -

Drafting the Constitution was as stressful decision because of the decision of adding in the bill of rights. The contitution was a key aspect to creating a strong national government, and in the end, 38 out of the 41 delegates signed the constitution. -
Production fo Cotton in the south
The Cotton Gin was a major benifactor to creating quicker cotton production. The Cotton Gin was created by Eli Whitney, and because of it the demand for slaves increased which in hand made the cotton business begin to flourish. -

Federalism was when the states shared power with the national government. Though this idea was appealing to some it was shot down and soon eliminated from political elections. -

The nations first frontier president and political power shifted from east to west. Jackson and his supporters opposed the bank of th U.S. because it was considered an enemy of the common people. -
westward expansion
In 1830 a law was passed to move Native Americans from the southeast to the west of the Mississppi. They began to expand with the Louisiana Purchase and continued with many expeditions. -
Indian Removal Act
President Jackson granted lands west of Mississppi in exchange for western territories. Those who resisted the move were forced to move west by the U.S. government which resulted in many deaths, which became known as the Trail of Tears. -
Manifest Destiny
Definition: the 19th-century doctrine or belief that the expansion of the US throughout the American continents was both justified and inevitable.
In 1845 Journalist John O'Sullivan first uses the term "Manifest Destiny" to describe the westward expansion of the United States. The idea soon led to wars between the Native Americans and the Mexicans. -
Mexican-American War
The Mexican government warned any attempt of annexation would lead to war, but Polk wanted to re-annex Texas. America declared war but Mexico never offically did. -
Presidential Election of 1860 (Lincoln)
The election set the stage for the Civil War because it split the Democratic party into North and South. Following Lincolns election some Souther states found it a good time for secession. -

The Civil War was between the North and the South. Though they say it started because of slavery, the only reason the south wanted the new found states to be slave states was to gain a better hold in congress. -
Emancipation Proclamation
Definition: The Emancipation Proclamation was an executive order issued on January 1, 1863, by President Lincoln freeing slaves in all portions of the United States not then under Union control (that is, within the Confederacy).
The Emancipation Proclamation was issued by Abraham Lincoln in the third year of Americas Civil War. It focused of the states that were rebelling, but not the border slave holding states. -
Lincolns Assassination
The person who killed President Lincoln was John Wilkes Booth. It was in Fords Theater, he was hot April 14th, 1865 and died the next day. -
Military Reconstruction Act of 1867
This act divided the South into five military districts, each under miltiary leadership. They did this to weaken the Souths control in their states and so they couldn't regroup and start another war. It was also required for them to accept the 13-15 Ammendments. -
KU KLUX KLAN
Definition: a secret organization in the southern U.S., active for several years after the Civil War, which aimed to suppress the newly acquired powers of blacks and to oppose carpetbaggers from the North, and which was responsible for many lawless and violent proceedings.
The Ku Klux Klan tormented the blacks in hopes that it would send so much fear and terror into them that they would be afraid to take the jobs of some whites.
