    The first demand created a shortage of white soldiers. Second about 70,000 Africans served. Third civil right organization campaigend for voting.
  • Brown vs. Board

  • Rosa Parks and the Montgomery Bus Boycott

    Rosa Parks was a black woman who refused to give up her seat in the front of the bus to a white man. She was then arrested. The black community in Montgomery started a boycott of the buses in Montgomery until discrimmination on buses was stopped.
  • Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) founded

  • Crisis at Central High School and the "Little Rock Nine"

  • Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) is founded

  • John F. Kennedy becomes President

    He ordered officials to protect the riders. other countries were hearing about this and it made us look bad. He sent in the government marshals.
  • Freedom Rides

    Six whites and seven blacks rode a bus from Washington D.C. through the deep South to try to convince the Supreme Court to ban segregation on buses and bus terminals. They rode and were attacked multiple times in the Southern states. U.S. marshals were sent to protect them and they eventually reached their goal of Louisiana.
  • Integration of The University of Mississippi "James Meredith"

  • MLK arrested and jailed in Birmingham, Alabama "Letter from a Birmingham Jail"

  • March on Washington D.C./ "I Have a Dream Speech"

    250,000 black and white citizens marched in Washington D.C. in order to stop black citizens from being treated like second class citizens. This is where Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous "I Have a Dream" speech where he called for an end to racism.
  • 16th Street Baptist Chrch in Birmingham bombed

  • John F. Kennedy assasssinated and Lyndon B. Johnson becomes President

  • Twenty Fourth Amendment "Poll Tax abolished"

    Passed for the right of the citizens of the U.S to vote. Congress shall have power to enforce it. Article was appropriate by legislation
  • Three civil-rights workers murdered in Mississippi

  • Malcom X shot to death

    Minister of muslim faith. Called for armed self defense. Gunned down by three men.
  • Selma to Montgomery March

  • Civil Rights Act of 1964 passed

    Blacks are allowed to vote. land marks piece of legislation in U.S. Congress amended 5 times.
  • Voting Rights Act of 1965 is Passed

  • Black Panthers Founded

  • Stokley Carmichael coins the phrase "Black Power"

    Lead to SNCC and CORE and the quit. This electified the night marhces. King urged him to stop because it provoked violence.
  • MLK assassinated

  • Civil Rights Act of 1968 passed

    Blacks gained freedom back. States provided equal oportunities for africans. Gave the equal rights and religion.
