  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    In the Missouri Compromise, the main issue was whether new states would be admitted as free or slave states. In the Missouri Compromise, the North and South were impacted differently because it affected the balance of power in Congress. The Missouri Compromise increased tensions by making slavery a national political issue.
  • Nullification Crisis

    Nullification Crisis
    The south said that the states should have the power. Because of this, the US government puts a Tariff on imported goods. The South refuses to pay, and are going to pay the original price before the tax. This leads to sectionalism because it was an argument between who had the power.
  • Fugitive Slave Act

    Fugitive Slave Act
    The Fugitive Slave Act made it so slave owners were able to go and capture their runaway slaves. This impacted the slaves because a place that was once free, is not free anymore. This made the North mad because they kind of viewed themselves as a safe haven for the runaway slaves. It further divided the North and South by the South coming to take the African American citizens of the North.

    The Compromise of 1850
    The Compromise of 1850 added two new states, Texas and California. This made the the free and slave states want more power. It impacted the people of the North and South by who got which of the states. Because they both chose a side, they were fine. However, California had half of it being a slave state and the other half being a free state.

    Uncle Tom's Cabin Published
    The main issue from this event is this book being published showing how the slaves were getting treated. The entire country was impacted, but most importantly the rich white people were most impacted. This book was banned in the South. This divided the North and South more because of the view of slavery
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    Kansas-Nebraska Act
    The issue of this was, it broke the Missouri Compromise. The Democratic party/Government was heavily impacted. It made it so the people were not able to trust the government anymore further dividing the country.
  • Bleeding Kansas and the Pottawatomie Massacre

    Bleeding Kansas and the Pottawatomie Massacre
    The Bleeding Kansas was a political figure getting, beat with a cane over the topic of slavery. The government was split by this event trying to win Kansas over. The Pottawatomie Massacre was John Brown going and killing 5 pro slavery gentlemen. This impacted the people as it was a huge deal. Both of these divided the slavery and free states more by both having very impactful conclusions. Kansas became a free state.
  • Dred Scott Decision

    Dred Scott Decision
    The Dred Scott Decision was the Supreme Court ruling him a slave yet. This shows a division between the people and the government as, slaves were not recognized as citizens. This contributes to Sectionalism by showing that the states can choose to be pro slavery or against it, did not give the slaves any rights of being a citizen.
  • John Browns Raid and Trial

    John Browns Raid and Trial
    John Brown went and raided Harpers Ferry, he did this as well as free slaves. The North was impacted because they thought that bloodshed was the only answer to fixing slavery. The South viewed John Brown as a terrorist and the North viewed him and his actions as heroic.

    The main problem here is that the south is trying to leave. They believe that Abe Lincoln will talk away their rights and their way of doing things. It shows sectionalism by, Abe saying that Slavery is illegal
