Six Degrees was first launched in 1997. This was the beginning of the social media we use today. Six degrees allowed users to upload a profile and make friends with other users. -
AIM is launched (AOL instant messenger)
AIM was one of the first instant messaging software. It allows the use of a computer to chat with others and keep in touch. But since then the users declined which eventually led to its shutdown in 2017. -
Open Diary launches
Open diary was created as an online diary community, an early example of social networking software. Open Diary allows users to create a public, private, or friends-only online diary. -
Livejournal
Live Journal was a blogging platform. It allowed users to keep an online diary. Users can join group journals, called communities. They can also friend other users. Live journal is still around today. -
MSN messenger was launched
It was an instant messaging platform created by Microsoft. MSN Messenger was Microsoft’s response to the dominance in instant messaging that AIM had at that time. With the popularity of smartphones and newer social media MSN had to shut down in late 2014. -
Habbo (formerly known as Habbo Hotel)
Habbo is an online virtual world. Its a place where you can create your own avatar, chat with friends and build and design games. -
Friendster was founded
Friendster is a social network and a social gaming site. It allows users to create profiles and connect with friends. -
HI 5 Launched
hi5 is a social network that allows users to relate a profile with personal information. You can send friend requests and you can choose who you want to see your profile. -
Myspace Launches
Myspace allowed users to create Web profile pages that could have photographs, express their interests, and link to other people’s profiles. The site is used to keep in touch with friends, “meet” and become friends with new people, or find potential romantic partners. Although Myspace is still around today, it is not as popular as it used to be and has changed so much. -
Skype
Skype was originally made to make voice calls from PC to PC. As more and more versions of Skype were created it came to become video calling, with chat messaging as well. It is still used to this day and is accessible on mobile computer and more. -
Facebook
Originally Zuckerberg created Facebook to be an app for Harvard students, but later was expanded to other universities. Later on was made for everyone. Facebook is now for people to make profiles, to connect with friends, work colleagues or people they don't know, online. And to share pictures, music, videos, and articles, as well as their own thoughts and opinions. -
Flickr
Flickr is a video and photo service, it allowed photographers to post their works to friends or the world. -
Youtube
YouTube is a social network where you can post videos. It has become one of the most popular social media websites. You can find almost anything and everything, this is why its so popular. -
Reddit
Reddit was created so users can write about news and other content. Reddit is about community and discussion. You can find communities you enjoy, share great stuff, and enjoy interacting with others who have the same interests. -
Twitter
Twitter is a social networking site where people can post their thoughts, or posts known at tweets. Later on Twitter was purchased by businessman Elon Musk. Who soon changed the name of Twitter to X. -
Tumblr
Tumblr is a short-form micro blogging social media platform. -
Friend Feed
FriendFeed was a real-time feed aggregator that gave updates from social media and social networking websites, social bookmarking websites, blogs and micro blogging updates. -
Pinterest
Pinterest is a visual discovery engine for finding ideas like recipes, home and style inspiration, and more. -
Instagram
Instagram was originally created for photography and to share pictures and connect to people. -
Twitch
Twitch is a video live streaming service, mostly for gaming. And has broadcasts that is mostly used for e-sports and music. -
Snapchat
This app was designed for younger audiences. It was created for people to express themselves. It is a multimedia instant messaging app. Photos and videos taken with the app are called snaps, which are meant to delete after an amount of time. -
Tinder
It is an online dating and social networking app. On Tinder, users "swipe right" to like or "swipe left" to dislike other users' profiles. -
Vine
Vine was a short-form video hosting service where users could share up to 10-second-long looping video clips. Meant to be fun and for entertainment. -
Patreon
Patreon is for content creators to run a subscription service and sell digital products. It helps artists and other creators earn a recurring income. -
Musical.ly
It allowed users created and shared short lip-sync videos. -
Discord
Discord is an instant messaging social platform which allows communication through voice calls, video calls, text messaging, and media. -
Tiktok
Tik tok is a social media platform for creating, sharing and discovering short videos. It is used by people all over the world. -
BeReal
BeReal is a daily notification that encourages users to share photos with friends of themselves and their day to day life given a randomly selected two-minute window every day. -
Threads
Threads offers users the ability to post and share text, images, and videos, as well as interact with other users' posts through replies, reposts, and likes.
