U.S. History Civil War Reconstruction Timeline

  • The 10% Plan

    The 10% Plan
The Ten Percent plan was put in place before Lincoln was assassinated and was important to the Reconstruction Era because a state would be readmitted into the Union when 10% of its 1860 population had taken an oath to the Union and accepted the end of slavery. Such polocy made Lincoln unpopular to radical republicans.
  • Wade-Davis Bill

    Wade-Davis Bill
Like the preceding 10% Plan, the Wade-Davis Bill wanted to have states that had joined the confeceracy take an oath to the Union and would only join again after a certain percent did so. However, unlike the 10% Plan, 50% actually needed to take the oath to be readmitted into the union. This is important for the same reason the 10% Plan was, Radical Republicans felt there should be stricter punishments in the south. However, more agreed with the Wade-Davis Bill.
  • The Freedmen's Beuro is Established

    The Freedmen's Beuro is Established
The Freedmen's Buro is important because it was established by Lincoln to help slaves integrate into the current society. Because slaves were not raised to know how to do things like reading or writing or vote they had to be taught how to do such things.
  • The Klu Klux Klan(KKK) Comes Together

The KKK is an important part of not only the Reconstruction Era but also American History. The KKK was there to show that there was still high tension between blacks and whites. It also showed that some people in America were not willing nor ready to accept the change in their history.
  • Black Codes

Black Codes, inforced in Misissipi, were important to the Reconstruction Era for many reasons. Two such reasons are that they showed that many whites down in the south were not ready to accept blacks and thus discriminated against them as well as that the blacks still were able to be cheated from the rights that they disserved.
  • Period: to

    The Reconstruction Era

  • President Abraham Lincoln is Assassinated

    President Abraham Lincoln is Assassinated
While the President and his family were enjoying a showing of a play in the Ford's Theatre Lincoln was shot in the head by one of the actors, John Wilkes Booth. This is important because Lincoln was the main advocate and fighter for the blacks rights. Without him the whole operation was put in jeperdy.
  • Andrew Johnson is Elected the 17th President

Andrew Johnson is Elected the 17th President
Andrew Johnson is elected president after the successful assassination of President Lincoln. This was important to the Reconstruction Era as it now had a new leader to lead them through this tough time. However, Johnson ended up failing misribly at his task.
  • The 13th Ammendment Ratified

The ratification of the 13th amendment was a huge event that happened during the Reconstruction Era. This is because not only did it make the Civil War worth what it was fought for, but also because it kickstarted pretty much the entire Reconstruction Era.
  • Impeachment of President Johnson

In the year of 1866 the Congress, made of radical republicans of the time, attempted to impeach their democratic president. This was important in the Reconstruction Era because it went and showed the mistrust between the Congress and the president. Others can also infer that if the people's representatives did not get along with the president of that time that the people did not either.
  • The Civil Rights Act Passes

    The Civil Rights Act Passes
The Civil Rights Act passed after President Johnson vetoed it. What the bill did at the time not allow descrimination due to sex or race. This was important because not only did it set down a precedent for the later times but was also passed after being vetoed for the first time. It also further proved what was already known, that President Johnson was racist like many others of the time.
  • Thr Fourteenth Amendment Ratified

The 14th Amendment, like its predecessor, was largely important to the whole Reconstruction Era. It adjusted the laws to state that all those born within America were citizens and had equal protectionunder the laws of the United States.
  • Sharecropping

Sharecropping began as a way to help both poor whites and black men to get land and farm on their own. This is important to Reconstruction because it helped get blacks who had no other work experiance than being slaves get the idea of how to sucessfuly run a farm. However, it did also help to keep the blacks slaves to the white men.
  • The 15th Amendment Ratified

The 15th Amendment like its two predicesors played a key role in the Reconstruction Era. This is because it gave men of all races the right to vote in the elections regardless of all previous sercumstances. Though women of all colors were still denyed the right to vote, men could no longer be forced to keep from voting due to any reason.
