  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850
    The Compromise of 1850 allowed California to be admitted as a free state while New Mexico and Utah could decide. It also ensured that there could not be any sale of slaves in Washington D.C.
  • Fugitive Slave Act

    Fugitive Slave Act
    This act required citizens to apprehend runaway slaves. This was seen as a victory for the South and made it difficult for slaves to get help while escaping.
  • Dred Scott Decision

    Dred Scott Decision
    Chief Justice Roger Taney said that slaves were private property and thus no decision needed to be made. This made it very difficult for slaves to accomplish anything in the future because they were considered property.
  • Election of 1860

    Election of 1860
    During the election the south split over the topic of slavery. The Republican party nominated Lincoln who won the election without a single electoral vote from the South.
  • South Outraged

    South Outraged
    South Carolina left the Union in December of 1860. Six other states also left the Union forming the Confederate States of America.
  • 1862 Anaconda Plan

    1862 Anaconda Plan
    In April of 1862 Grant and Buell defeat CSA at the Battle of Shiloh as part of the Anaconda plan. A Naval blockade also captured New Orleans. In March-July Lee defeats McClellan in 7 days battle protecting Richmond.
  • Chancellorsville

    Chancellorsville
    In this battle it was Joe Hooker for the union vs Lee for the South. It was Lees greatest victory with a 12 mile surprise attack in the woods. Jackson was shot in the arm and died because of this battle.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    Emancipation Proclamation
    This freed all enslaved people in rebellious states and helped keep foreign help away for the South.
  • Gettysburg

    Gettysburg
    This was considered the "turning point" of the war because it showed how the Union had a real chance. Lees army was running out of supplies when the Union attacked. 50,000 people were killed but it was still considered a Union victory.
  • 13th Amendment

    This amendment abolished slavery completely
  • Shermans March to the Sea

    Shermans March to the Sea
    Use "scorched earth" war tactic. Traveled through the South burning major cities such as Atlanta to the ground and terrorizing civilians.
  • Lees Surrender

    Lees Surrender
    Lee surrenders to Grant on April 9,1865 at Appomattox Court House. Lee asked that they could keep their horses and pistols to make it home safely.
  • Lincolns Death

    Lincolns Death
    After the war Lincoln was watching a play when John Wilkes Booth shot Lincoln in the head killing him.
  • 14th Amendment

    14th Amendment
    The 14th Amendment passed stating all persons born in the U.S. were citizens and prevented former CSA from holding office.
  • 15th Amendment

    15th Amendment
    No citizen could be denied the right to vote based on color or race or previous servitude
