The Compromise of 1850
Henry Clay worked a compromise to both North and South, the compromise contained provisions to appease northerners and southerners. California was admitted as a free state, New Mexico and Utah could decide to be slave states or not, and Texas to give up claim to New Mexico territory. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854
Popular Sovereignty, allowed territories of Kansas and Nebraska to decide if they would allow slavery within their borders, this also repealed the Missouri Compromise of 1820 which prohibited slavery in the North. -
Election of 1856
Republican Party forms to protest slavery, James Buchanan a democrat defeats John C. Fremont (republican), Dred Scott decision of 1857. -
Election of 1860
Democratic party splits over issue of slavery, republican nominates Lincoln, Lincoln wins without electoral votes from the south (39% popular vote) -
Anaconda Plan of 1862
Consists of blockading the south ports capturing New Orleans, splitting the south by gaining control of Mississippi River, and capturing the confederate capital of Richmond. -
First Battle of Bull Run 1861
Union wins, first major battle of the armies in Virginia. Thomas "stonewall" Jackson's Virginian's made a stand. -
Antietam
Gen Robert E. Lee invades the north and 12,000 men were killed in the first three hours. Bloodiest day in U.S. military history. -
Battle of Fredericksburg 1862
Union suffers a costly defeat, loses thirteen thousand men while Confederate States of America only loses 5,000. -
Emancipation Proclamation
Declaring on January 1, 1863 to keep all enslaved people in the rebellious states. -
Chancellorsville
The Union Army defeated by Lee with their great tactics. Stonewall Jackson was shot in the left arm and dies from wound. -
Gettysburg
The most famous and important battle of the Civil War, 3 days and nearly 15,000 men killed in Union's victory. -
Election of 1864
Abraham Lincoln gets re-elected as the president, won with 55% of the popular vote which ends south's hope of negotiated peace. -
Sherman's March to the Sea
A total war from Savannah to Atlanta. 62,000 men marched to the Sea and it was the first battle where civilians were targeted. -
President Lincoln's death
Lincoln and his wife watches a play at Ford's theater and during the play John Wilkes Booth shoots Lincoln in the head. -
The 13th Amendment
The 13th amendment was ratified and Abolished slavery, provides that "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction."
