  • Library of Congress Established

    President John Adams approved $5,000 to purchase books for the use of Congress, establishing the Library of Congress. The first books were ordered from London and were kept in the U.S. Capitol, the library’s first home. The first library catalog, dated April 1802, listed 964 volumes and nine maps

    3rd President Thomas Jefferson

    Author of the Declaration of Independence and was a leading figure in America’s early development. During the American Revolutionary War, he served in the Virginia legislature and the Continental Congress and was governor of Virginia. Also served as U.S. minister to France and U.S. secretary of state, and was vice president under John Adams. During his two terms in office, the U.S. purchased the Louisiana Territory and Lewis and Clark explored the vast new acquisition.
  • Louisiana Purchase Treaty

    Robert Livingston, the U.S. minister to France, and James Monroe signed the Louisiana Purchase Treaty in Paris, doubling the size of the United States and paving the way for the nation's westward expansion.
  • The Lewis and Clark Expedition

    Thomas Jefferson tasked Meriwether Lewis with exploring lands west of the Mississippi River that comprised the Louisiana Purchase. Lewis chose William Clark as his co-leader for the mission. 05/1804-09/1806

    Ordered by President Andrew Jackson on May 28, 1830. The law authorized the president to negotiate with southern Native American tribes for their removal to federal territory west of the Mississippi River in exchange for their lands.

    In the early stages of Texas' war for independence from Mexico, a group of Texan volunteers led by George Collinsworth and Benjamin Milam overwhelmed the Mexican garrison at the Alamo and captured the fort, seizing control of San Antonio.
