Two Party System Development

  • Antifederalists

    Antifederalists were opposed to the ratification of the Constitution, supported Thomas Jefferson, and believed in a less powerful central government.
  • Democratic-Republicans

    Party that opposed federalists; made up of farmers and wanted more rights for the states.
  • Federalists

    Federalists were in favor of the Constitution; supported John Adams.
  • Jacksonian Democrats

    A movement for more democracy in American government. Led by President Andrew Jackson, this movement championed greater rights for the common man and was opposed to any signs of aristocracy in the nation.
  • Party of Lincoln

    The party supported classical liberalism, opposed the expansion of slavery, and supported economic reform. Abraham Lincoln was the first Republican president. Under the leadership of Lincoln and a Republican congress, slavery was banned in the United States in 1865.
  • Roosevelt Democrat

    Believed that common people can have a vision. That vision can and must include all people for the good of the country. It is also the realization that the government is responsible for nurturing the dream.
  • Modern Republican

    The Republican Party is often called "the right" or "conservative." More formally, the Republican Party is known as the GOP (Grand Old Party). The symbol of the GOP is an elephant.
  • Modern Democrats

    The Democratic Party has promoted a liberal platform; the philosophy of modern liberalism advocates social and economic equality, along with the welfare state. It seeks to provide government regulation in the economy.
