  • Battle of the Atlantic

    Battle of the Atlantic
    At this point, America had entered the war and was working to assist Britian the best they could. Britain had also set up a blockade in the Atlantic. In retaliation, Germany sent U-boats into the Atlantic to break up the blockade and prevent any supplies from America reaching Britain. Using a new technology similar to radar, the Britsh were put at an advantage. photo credit:

  • Germany invades Poland

    Germay goes against the non-agression pact Germany signed two months earlier. After preparing strategies and miliatary forces for three years, Germany invades Poland. Poland had a very weak and unprepared military and could not defeat Germany (and later the Soviet-Union). This action resulted in Britain declaring war on Germamy for breaking the pact.
  • Germany invades Demark and Norway

    Claiming he had to protect Demark and Norway, Hitler attacked and occupied them. Having previously signed a treaty with each of them, problems arose in Norway. The leader Vidkun Quisling was shunned, looked down upon and called a "traitor."
  • Paris falls and France surrenders

    Paris falls and France surrenders
    This date is when Germany began attacking France. After almost all of June, France finally surrenders to Germany. Marshal Henri Petain was the leader of the French forces. He decided to surrender. They sign an armistice. photo credit:

  • London Bombing Begins

    London Bombing Begins
    The London bombing was part of a long term plan of Hitler's to bomb Great Britain into cooperating with them / surrendering. During this bombing the first versions of RADAR technology were invented. This lasted until June of 1941. Hitler abandoned it in order to persue his attack on the Soviet Union. photo credit:

  • Yugoslavia and Greece occupied by Germany

    Hitler attacked Yugoslavia. He said his motives were to protect the Germans that lilved there. During this time, Italy went against Albinia. Through all of this, there was strong and powerful resistance by Yugoslavia.
  • Evacuation of Dunkirk Begins

    When Beligium fell, the British troops were trapped. The only way to escape it was to evaculate throught Dunkirk. The operation was a success. They asked local people to lend them any ships or modes of trasportaion to evaculate on. At the end of it the troops were not too battered.
  • Japan Attacks Pearl Harbour

    Japan Attacks Pearl Harbour
    In the midst of compromise and peacemaking, Japan bombs Pearl Harbour, an American naval base in Hawaii. This brought the United States out of isolation and into war with Japan. Because of this events, The United States moved to help Britain in Europe. This event changed the course of the war. photo credit:

  • Japan attacks Philipeans. Eventaully They Fall to Japan

    Gaining foot in the Philippeans would result in the Allies controlling all of East Asia. They attacked the day after Pearl Harbor. General Douglas MacArthur led the United States. They were short many troops and eventually endured very harsh conditions during the Bataan Death March.
  • Britain Attacks Egypt

    There was revolutionary fighiting tactics used durin this battle. Erwin Rommel used "trickery and camoflauge." Their goal was to reach the Suez Canal. America arrived in Egypt near the end of the battle and commenced Operation Trench.
  • Battle of Midway

    As a result of sucessful decoding during Pearl Harbour, Admiral Chester Nimitz brought a large number of troops to Midway island to attack Japan. Japaneese responded with signifigant amount of airforce. By the end of the Battle of Midway, the Japaneese threat to the pacifiic east was ended.
  • Battle of Stalingrad Begins

    There was house-to-house fighting ended in the defeat of Germany. This took place in Stanligrad, a Russian city. Thousand of people died. After that, Germany was defensive from the East.
  • Manhattan Project Begins

    Manhattan Project Begins
    The Manhattan Project was a "research and devlopment project". This project was started to create nuclear weapons for the Allied Forceds to use in World War II. Very notable scientists worked on the development of this weapon. The end results were seen in the bombings on Hiroshima and Nagisaki. photo credit:

  • Operation Trench

    A large group of military force arrived on the Northern coast of Africa in Algeria. It was called Operation Trench. There was a little differece of opinon about the landings. The Free French suported the landings and the Vichy French did not.
  • Allies Land In Aznio

    With the goal of conquering Rome, Italy landed in Aznio. They suceeded in alerting the others when they landed on the beach. Although, they were trapped in a "pocket" of sorts, putting them at a disadvantage. Eventually, they were lifted out of the "pocket" in aircraft.
  • D-Day

    D-Day
    Led by Dwight D. Eisenhower, the allied trooped landed on the Normandy beaches in France. Their goal was to capture the capital of France, Paris. D-Day gave them solid footing on the beaches and allowed them to continue inland.     Battle of Iwo Jima
    This was a major battle of World War II. The United States needed to get foot on the islands of Iwo Jima in Japan. This was because they planned to gain acess to the main islands this way. They were sucessful. photo credit:

    Atomic Bomb is Dropped on Hiroshima
    These are the only times in history where atom bombs were used for warfare. After several years of development, the United States dropped the bombs. The result of this act was the end of the war. Japan surrended 15 days after the bombing of Nagasaki.

  • Battle of the Bulge

    Battle of the Bulge
    Germany attacked on the Western Front throught the Battle of the Bulge. This battle was part of a long string of operations whose goals were to split the Allied lines in half. Characterisitics of this batlle included the moutainous terrain and harsh, winter weather. "The Battle of the Bulge was the largest and bloodiest battle fought by the United States in World War II."
