Lee's Confederate army and Meade's Union army battled at the town of Gettysburg. Lee's army was greatly weakened, and Union moral restored. The Confederate moral was hurt, as well as the Confederate's chances of Europe allying with them. -
Confederates in Vicksburg surrender
Vicksburg was the last Confederate fort protecting the Mississippi. If captured, the Union would have control of the while Mississippi. On May 22nd Grant began a siege of the city, and blocked all supplies and people from coming or going. When the Confederates surrendered, the Confederacy was now split and the Union was winning the war in the west. -
Ulysses S. Grant is Given Command of all Union Armies
He was a determined leader who helped the Union win several battles. Later in 1868 Grant became president.
