Nov 1, 1755

The magnitude of this earthquake was 9.0. The death toll of this quake was around 20,000. The earthquake lasted from 3.5 to 6 minutes and damaged over 12,000 buildings. Some fissures at the surface were close to 5 meters wide.

Krakatoa Eruption (Java/Sumatra)

The eruption was rated a 6 on the VEI. This eruption had a death toll of over 36,000 people. Over 70% of the island and surrounding land was destroyed by the eruption. The explosion is estimated to be one of or the loudest sound ever produced at 310 dB.

This quake had a magnitude of 7.1. The death toll was 2,100. The quake and tsunami displaced over 10,000 villagers. Unlike most tsunamis, this was triggered by an underwater landslide that resulted from the earthquake.
