  • Lisbon Earthquake

    Lisbon Earthquake
    At approximately 9:40 am an 8.5 Earthquake shook Lisbon, Portugal. The disturbance caused fires and a tsunami. These events would kill about 20,000 people. Lisbon was nearly obliterated as a result, and Portugal would also suffer from the political ramifications.
  • Krakatoa Eruption

    Krakatoa Eruption
    The eruption of Krakatoa was preceded by several earthquakes felt for miles. Then, on August 27th Krakatoa erupted with a VEI of 6 and was heard as far away as Australia. The effects were felt all across the globe. Some of these were tsunamis and earthquakes that caused the death of 36000 people.

    Aleutian Earthquake
    This underwater earthquake would cause a tsunami in the Pacific Ocean. It was an 8.1 and caused a larger than normal tsunami for the magnitude. There were difficulties in sending out information about the tsunami before it hit. It caused $26 million in damage, sweeping through towns in Hawaii. It would also kill 160 people, dragging some back with the receding water.
  • Great Chilean Earthquake

    Great Chilean Earthquake
    The Great Chilean Earthquake was a 9.5, the strongest earthquake in known history. It is also known as the Valdivia Earthquake. The earthquake by itself killed 1,600 people in Valdivia, and caused a tsunami. The resulting tsunami hit Hawaii, Japan, and the Philippines. In Hawaii it killed 61 people in a town called Hilo.

    Good Friday Earthquake
    The Good Friday Earthquake struck at 5:36 pm as the result of a megathrust. The 9.2 earthquake primarily affected Alaska, giving it the name the Alaska Earthquake. It caused land to raise in some areas. The tsunami it caused along with its own initial damages killed about 130 people. In addition, a landslide caused by it killed 32 people.
  • Hokkaido Earthquake

    Hokkaido Earthquake
    This earthquake had its origin in the Japan Sea. It was a magnitude 7.8 and caused a tsunami which stuck Hokkaido. There, it bypassed tsunami defenses. This resulted in the deaths of 120 people. Another wave of the Tsunami struck Russia killing an additional 110 people.
  • Papua New Guinea Earthquake

    Papua New Guinea Earthquake
    This quake was itself a 7.1. A landslide occurred due to this quake however, which caused a tsunami. This tsunami had 3 waves which killed 2,100 people. In addition it injured and de-homed many more. It called attention to the potential of smaller quakes to have devastating effects.

    At 12:58 am an 8 minute long earthquake occurred near Sumatra. This earthquake was a 7.1 which caused a tsunami. This tsunami was the 3rd worst in history. It killed 227,000 people across multiple countries. Its effects were felt for many miles.

    This 9.8 pacific quake caused a tsunami with several waves. It was in an area of known seismic activity. These reached 3 countries. There it killed 200 people.
  • Chile Earthquake

    Chile Earthquake
    At 3:34am an earthquake occurred on the coast of Chile and lasted for 3 minutes. This coastal earthquake was an 8.8 and caused a tsunami. The earthquake was felt for some distance. The combination of both these events killed 700 people.
  • Tohoku Earthquake

    This earthquake originated underwater near Tohoku and was a 9.1. It is the largest earthquake in Japan's history. It caused a massive tsunami that killed 20,000 people. In addition it shifted the earth's entire axis. It also raised the coast in some parts of Japan.
