Tsunami in Lisbon, Portugal
After a massive earthquake, a huge tsunami engulfed Lisbon, Portugal, killing 20,000 people. The magnitude of the earthquake was 9 and it caused the waves of the tsunami to be about 23 feet high. An interesting fact about this tsunami is that it happened on All Saints Day and many of the Portuguese people were at church. As part of the celebration, they lit many candles and when the earthquake happened, the candles lit the altar flowers on fire leading to fires that raged for 5 days after. -
