Invasion of the Soviet Union
Adolf Hitler launched his armies in a massive invasion of the Soviet Union. 3 million German soldiers, 150 divisions, and 3 thousand tanks invaded from the North Cape to the Black Sea, a 2 thousand mile area. Hitler was needing to secure Lebensraum (“living space”) to ensure the survival of Germany for generations to come. -
Pearl Harbor Attack
Pearl Harbor a U.S. Naval base near Honolulu, HI was a devastating surprise attack by Japanese forces. The attack damage nearly 20 American naval vessels, including eight battleships, and over 300 airplanes. More than 2400 Americans died in the attack, including civilians, another 1000 people were wounded. The next day President Franklin D Roosevelt declared war on Japan. -
Battle of Stalingrad
The Soviet successfully defended the city of Stalingrad, Russia, USSR, during WWII. Russians consider it to be the greatest battles of their Great Patriotic War, and most historians consider it to be the greatest battle of the entire conflict. Battle of Leyte Gulf
The largest naval battle in history off the coast of the Philippines, was a step in the US advancement towards the Japanese home islands. All available Japanese force were used in the battle, all four Japanese light carriers were sunk as were three battleships. The allies gained control of the Pacific. -
Battle of the Bulge
The Battle of the Bulge was the largest fought battle on the western front in Europe during WWII, also the largest battle ever fought by the United States Army. It was a German offensive intended to drive a wedge between the American and British armies in France in the low countries and recapture port of Antwerp. 500,000 German, 600,000 American, and 55,000 British troops were involved. This was an Allied Victory and took place towards the end of WWII.
