French fortresses against the spanish
Fort Caroline is built in Florida using a little trench and a nine foot high battle ment of earth. -

Settlers at Jamestown, Virginia made a small fort using soem simple trenches -
Spanish defenses against British
The spanish built Castillo San Marcos in St. Augustine, Florida. It was based off the classic European Four-Bastioned fortresses. It was surrounded by a trench flooded with water. The British lacked the artillery to take them down. -
King Philips' war
In 1676, Boston sealed off their penninsula with eathworks and a moat, showing one of the earliest forms of entrenchment deffenses. -
Preventing Spanish ambushes
The British built fort King George in modern day Darien, Georgia, out of logs and earth to serve as protection. It served as an outpost until 1732 -
Siege of Yorktowm
The Americans and French began to dig trenches to to fight off the British troops by using the trenches as cover and shelters. These trenches ranged up to 2,000 yards long. -
Second coastal defense
A second system of coastal defenses were created (replacing earlier ones) that served as multi storey combat platforms with guns in masonary casements. Detached earthworks were addedas ground deffenses. this served as a crucial part for the deffenses. -
The Civil War
Officers entered the war with two conflicting doctrines, one of them being entrenchment. An officer wrote: At the begining of the war, there was a debate over the use of fieldworks requiring manual labor, this was thought to detract dignity from soldiers, so they created a group of engineers called "dirt-diggers" -
WW1: Trench warfare: why was it used?
Trenchs were used in world war one becaus epeople thought that it seemed to be the easiest battle strategie and surprisingly effective, but the biggest problem was they were nto thinking about the well being of men whne they decided to use this tactic therefore making it miserable for the men who had to spend their nights in the trenches. -
WW2; Trench warfare: why wasn't it effectrive
Trench warfare was not used in ww2 for this reason: heavy artillery. In world war 2 weaponry was much more developed than in world war 1 creating in effectiveness
